At a meet'ing of the West Coas ; Ladies' Hockey Association it -was decided to hold a seven-a-side tournament at Cobden on July loth, junior teams to Lie eligible, and the Scalmer Gup to be awarded to the winners. It was resolved to institute, on July 22nd. s knock-out competition for the Poliaiu Cup, presented by the Kuuanga League Football Club. Committed for Sentence. At a sitting of the Magistrate's Court, before Mr "vV. Meldriun, S.M., John McLean was committed to the Supremo Court for sentence on a chars o of unlawful carnal knowledge of a girl about 15 years of age. Bail was allowed in one surety of £IOO and two of £SO each. Greymouth Jockey Club. The monthly meeting of the Greymouth Jockey Club was held this after noon. Present—Messrs T. Ooates (chairman 1 ). W. E. Kettle, A. Bcban, W. H. Parfitt, and H. F.'Dcogan. A letter was received from the New Zealand Racing Conference advising that the presentation of a solid silver tea and coffee service would be made to Sir George Clifford at Trentham on. July 7th by his Excellency the Gov-ernor-General. The communication in yited presidents and stewards of totalisator clubs to be present. A lengthy circular letter waa received from the Racing Conference sug gesting that the club should use its influence in support of the movement for a reduction in" racing taxation. Telegraphic Communication. As a result of good work by tho ro pair gangs, telegraphic and telephonic communication with Christchurch was restored this morning. Totar a Plat Sale' Yards. A meeting of the shareholders of the Totara Flat sale yards was held yesterday afternoon. It was resolved to wind'up the present company. Messrs T. E, Coates, H. Gilmer, and D. Baybutt were appointed o. committee to deal with the transfer of the lease', and to arrange for the formation of a new company to take over and put the yards in order. Competitions Society. Messrs Beath and Co., Chrietchurch, have presonted tho West Coast Competitions Society with a challenge baton for annual competition in tho . children's choir section. The first name to be inscribed on the baton was that of tho Marist Brothers' School Choir, who wou the competition in 1924. Personal. Members of the Beef ton Ladies' Guild entertained Mrs Hyland, who, with Sergeant Hyland and family, leave's shortly for Christchurch, at "a social gathering in Knox Church. The Iter. J. Watt, who presided, prosented the guest with a tablecloth and JJoulton salad bowl. Miss Joyce Hyland was presented with a leather music-ease.

Mr and Mrs J. Woolhouse, who were recently married, were- accorded a welcome home social at Kanieri, and Mr T. Boyd, on behalf of the residents of the surrounding district, presented Mrs Woolhouse with a silver cake dish. Mr A. H. Boss, of the telegraphic staff at the Greymouth Post Office, has received notice of transfer to Wanganui. Mr C. Smith, of Westport, will succeed him at Greymouth. Mr H. H. Allison, Kector of the Greymouth State School, has recovered from his recent illness. Mr J. Laurenson, Assistant District Public Works Engineer, Westport, • is visiting Greymouth. The Weather. While other parts of New Zealand are experiencing atrocious weather, n.ild, springlik-3 conditions, and beautiful sunshine with every prospect of a continuance, prevail on the West Coast. Automobile Association. The members of the Canterbury Automobile Association, who have been engaged in a tour of the West Coast, addressed meetings of the Recftou and Westport branches. This evening they roturned to Greymouth and mc\ the members of the local branch. There was a representative gathering of motorists, over whom Dr. W. McKay presided. Mr Falck-apologised for the absence of Mr Nicholson,-the president. lie said they were very pleased to be on the Coast in view of the weather t-lse-wherc. Hospitable treatment had been accorded them everywhere. He praised the West Coast hotel accommodation, and said the scenery far surpassed their anticipations. Everything possible would be done to make it 3 charms known to others who had not been fortunate enough to visit the district. In an interesting fashion the speaker sketched the history, organisation, and functions of the Association. Ha said that their tour would have been much more interesting if the bridges were sign-posted, as was being done in Canterbury.

Mr Havrkes said that having seen the Buller Gorge, and from what he knew of the scenery further south, ho was certain that the West Coast was destined to become the principal resort of tourists in the Dominion. He detailed tho Association's scheme for attracting additional tourists to the South Island. The party had visited the GreymouthYCestport coastal road, and he strongly advised them to lay the matter of its completion before the Main Highways Board, members of which would visit the Coast. 'When the Picton-W'ellington ferrv service was an accomplished fact, large numbers of North Island motorists would visit the Coast. The completion of the direct road to Hokiiika would also be a very good thing. Tkey found the main Grey road north m very good condition, and the patrol system in force commended itself very highly- . , Mr Dobson dealt in a humorous fashion with the pioneering work in, connexion with West Coast roads, and gave an interesting account of survey.; work. ! Tenncnt presided at to-night 's meeting of the Greymouth School Committee. The averages were: Main School 541 out of 0.4, Blaketowu 00 out of 101. lor the nrst time in several years the staff was complete, there being no relieving teacner.
