. « The Otira Social Hall was packed to capacity when a plain and fancy dress ball was held by the local school committer in aid of the ground improvements fund. The. first prize for best fancy dress was won by Miss Henderson (Pierrot), Mrs King (Crossword puzzle) being second. Uthers presentwere:—Mesuanies Amalvio (<Jueen of Hearts), Hopkins (isiack 'f'opsyj, Morris (Uura jbpiuemic;, isaac ixierrot), Jiayor .uicJue (Jiumacion;, Hauton (Spanish Dancer), -Kooertson (t'oppy),' m Hliiuns (\nre.fss), loung I (Christmas Cracker; Ualivtil (lnsu Colleen;, tiowe (Kainoow; Ailott (Vjorntiower), i'otiocli (.VJtiaKtr feirl), -uisses .bates (Otira Settlement), -Ucuae (.U'oiiy), Hewson (Keep off the Grass;, jtiopUins (Cabaret Dancing Girl), 'loud (dpanisn Dancer), A. Ainalvio (Powder .Putt), D. Amalvie (Ballet Cirl), Hay (liastern Lady). The prize ior gentlemen's fancy costume went to Mr L. "Williams (Golliwog), and for the best children's fancy aress, to Joyce Ailott and Russell iounsx (linde and Bridegroom). The waltzing competition went to Mrs H. Young and Mr J. Carrell and the lucky spot waltz to Mrs W. Trazer and Air Black. Other competitions were won as under: —Children's recitation: Kuth King and Alf Hopkins.; skipping competition, Mazie Williams and C Bryant; special prize for skipping, Iris Abrahams. Other competitions were won by Mrs Pollock and Mi- H. Spencer. Mush; was provided by the Otira Orchestra, under Mr Abrahams. A dainty supper was provided by the ladies. During the evening the chairman of the,school committeev(Mr F. Ailott) thanked everybody for their attendance. About- sixty members arid friends of the local branch of the- E.F.C.A., gathered in the railway hall for the annual reunion. The chair was taken by the retirhu: president (Mr I<\ Ailott). A very pleasant evening was spent, interspersed with speeches, songs, recitations, stepdancing, and club swinging. Mr Chalk (Greymouth) was the accompanist. Bloch and responded to by Messrs liothwell, Williams; and Ailott; "The Visitors," .proposed by Mr W. Frazer and responded to by Messrs Hoglund, Wallis, and Bryant; "The Fire Brigade," proposed by MiBrown and responded to br Messrs Yardley, Smith, and Lee; '\>»r Major and Mr Wearn" proposed by Mr Rothwel!; "Performers." proposed- by Mr A. Williams and responded to by Mr McFariane: "The Musicians,' 1 proposed by Mr Young and responded to by Messrs Chalk, Abrahams, and Brown ; "The Stewards" proposed by_ Mr Frazer and responded to by Mr Young and Mr Dickie.
