DUNEDIN EXHIBITION.
CABINET'S ASSISTANCE TO LOCAL BODIES. (PHESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) WELLINGTON, July 3. Last session legislation was passed enabling local authorities to defray out of their ordinary revenue the- cost of exhibiting at the Dunedin Exhibition, or making grants to tho Exhibition authorities. This, however, does hot meet those cases where the rates for this j r ear have already been struck. To provide for this contingency, the Hon. G. J. Anderson has notified tho Wellington Committee that Cabinet has agreed to ask Parliament to legalise the obtaining of the necessary money by way of overdraft. This has bad a good effect on the preparations in Wellington district, and now that financial assistance will .be forthcoming, it is expected that the display from this province -will be far more - successful than at first appeared likely. The Minister of Industries and Commerce (Hon. G. J. Anderson) stated yesterday that any local body had power to vote money for the Dunedin Exhibition, so long as the amount was a reasonable one. Authority was pro-= vided iii Section 75 of the Finance Act of last' year. The statement was drawn, forth by! a recent deputation of Wellington business men who asked that such authority should be given.
