COLLISION WITH TRAM.
TAXI-DRIVER INJURED.. (PKBSS ASSOCIATION TELEOKIM.) WELLINGTON, July' 1. A. taxi-driver, named George Ryan, crashed into a stationary tram near the Thorndon sheds at midnight. The tram was at a standstill and the conductor, named Green, was changing tho pole when the motor-car, travelling, it is alleged, at twenty miles an hour on the -tramlines, came, up witlfbut warning and struck the tram. Green'was knocked over, but; managed to roll over in the niud. before the tra.ru could move over him. Motorman Peacock was passing "through the tram and was. nearly thrown by the shock of the impact, but, recovered and went out to tho motor-car. He found Ryan lying unconscious on the front seat, with the windshield smashed and the steering wheel broken. The steering wheel had jammed the driver against tho back of the seat. Ryan was ,sent to hospital in ..a serious condition. The accident is inexplicable at present, but it is surmised that the tra» was in the darkness for a momonfe and that Ryan, having his own lights dimmed," did not notice it in. the- roadway.
