TIMARU. Social and Personal. i Mrs Lloyd (Gcraldine) is in Blenheim. Miss Ethel Hart (Kilo street) left yesterday for Morvon. Miss F. Mac Lean t.Wai-ili road) is on a short visit to Oamaru. Mrs R. H. Grieve is spending a holiday at Fairlie with her parents, Mr and Mrs J. "\V. Dines. Mr J. V. Gresso'ii 5 , who was tho guest of Mr and Mrs C. H. G reason (Solwyn Street), left yesterday for Tailiape. Mr R. "Wood (Hawke's Bay), who spent the week-end at ''Otumarama - ' with Mr and Mrs Melville Jameson, returned north on Tuesday. The Weather. The improvement in the weather conditions on Tuesday night provedto be only temporary, and yesterday morning broke wet and cold. Rain continued at intervals throughout the day, and last evening there was no sign of a change for tho better. Vital Statistics. The vital statistics for the month of June show an increase in births and a decrease of one in deaths, as compared with the corresponding month of last year. The figures are as follows, those for June, 1924, being given in parentheses:—Births, males. 20 (19); females. It (11); total 34 (30): deaths, males. 11 (13); females. 5 (4); totol, 1G (17); marriages l.j (11). Customs Returns. The Customs returns ior_ tho Port of Timaru for last month show an increase over the figures for the corresponding montl) of last year. Last month tho Customs duties received amounted to £9G3G Bs, as against £8258 9s for the same month last year. The beer duties for the same period were £1059 12s 5d and £726 15s 9d respectively, making the totals £10,095 Os 5d for the month just ended, and £8985 4s 9d for Jane. 1924. A glance at the returns for the quarter ]usfc ended shows a substantial increase over the figures for *he same quarter of last year, although the half-yearly figures are not quite up to those of the first six months of last year. The March quarter of this year was below •Ahat of last, but the increase m the quarter just- ended was not sufficient to wipe off the deficiency in the first quarter. The Customs duty for last quarter amounted to £29,167 lGs Hd, as against £24,154 13s Gd last year, and the beer dutv was £2699 9s 2d, as against £2973 9s Id. The totals were" 1925. £33,406 Is Id; 1924, £28,376 lGs Id. The total revenue ■for the .first six months of this rear was. £G1.357 14s 10d and for the first six months of last year, £G3,930 Ids lOd.
TEMUKA. The monthly meeting of the branch of the Mothers' Union was held on Tuesday afternoon. After the usual service, the president (Mrs Hervey) gave an interesting and helpful address, taking for her subject "Prayer." During tho afternoon a presentation was made to Mrs Hervey, who is leaving the district. Mrs Bremner (vice-president), in making >the presentation, referred to the good qualities of the president and of the good, work she had done in connexion with the Mothers' Union. Thanks were due to her for being the means of forming tho Temuka branch, which already had a membership of over 50. Unfortunately, tho cold, wiutry da'y prevented a great many being present. Monday being the anniversary day of St. Peter's Church, Temuka, a special thanksgiving service wa» held in the evening. The vicar (the Eev. J.R. Hervey) conducted the service. Although the night was wet and bitterly cold, thcite was a very fair attendance. After the service a social gathering was held in the Parish Hall, when a jolly evening-was spent in socialgamcs and music.
