—♦— ASHBURTON. GENERAL NEWS. A break was experienced in :'t' lC weather on Tuesday night, but rain f°" again yesterday morning. Competitions in cards, ping-po-ii"', jad bagatelle occupied the evening at &C weekly meeting of the .St. Men's C'luk The prizes -were won hJ" Messrs E. Vincent. E. Loach, and S. Uawke. <'ompared with the figures of the corresponding month of last year, tlie births in the Ashburton registration district show a. substantial increase f° r last,montli, the figures being 37 and 22 respectively. On the other hand there were 17 deaths last month and 11 in June, 10-M. The marriages show a?dccrease of two, the figure for June of this year being six and for the corresponding month of last year eight. Acclimatisation Society. A meeting of the Council of the Ashburton Acclimatisation Society was attended by Messrs W. H. Robinson (chairman), J. Donn, P. Cookson, E. B. Xewton, A. Cates, X. L. Wood, and P. Crumb. Mr \V. 11. Robinson was appointed treasurer. The matter of engaging someone to destroy shags' was left to the chairman. . The work of removing small trout from the Hinds river to the Ashburton river was left over until next month. It was decided to approve of tho South Canterbury Society's suggestion in the matter of suppressing strokehauling in the Kangitata river, and to forward a. letter asking for more information upon the subject. ' • Regarding the culling of deer in the Jtakaia forests, it was resolved to reply to the North Canterbury Society to the effect that this work would probably have to be held over until a more suitable time of the year. It was decided to forward to the Tourist Department a, report upon the fishing streams in the Society's district. Mail Notices. Mails close for northern ports at Ashburton to-day at 5 p.m., lata fee 5.25 p.m., guard's van 5.4 a p.m.. Mails for Fiji, Samoa, Vago Pago. Honolulu, also Juiiiiu. Tonpa, Nine. RUAPUNA. The new party line is now working, having been completed last week. Nearly every house, in tho district now has telephone communication, No services were'held here on Sunday owing to the inclemency of tho weather.' Both_ tho Rev. P. Beresford and the Rev. The"following "are the -meteorological observations as j-ecgrded by Mr James Carr, 'Utudston,"" jMethfcn, for the past month: —Rain foil on 14 days, tho maximum fall being 1.3G indies on the 28th. Tho total fall for tho month was 4.73 inches, and for. the corresponding, month last year ,1.97 inches. For the period ending June 30th, 1924, the total was .16.(59 inches, while for the same period this year ; the total is 18.74 inches. Eleven inches of snow were measured at Mr Carr's place in the open on Tuesday,' while in sheltered spots it was up to 15 inches. A householders' meeting was held in tho Anama School on Monday evening, for tho purpose of electing a school' committee. Considering the win try weather, n fair number was present. ; The retiring committee was elected as follows:—Messrs J. Brown, Alclver (chairman), W. T. Williams (secretary and treasurer), AV. J. Robertson and J. McEwon. A vote of thanks was passed'to the teacher, Miss Blackmail.
CHERTSEY. The fortnightly card tournament was well attended. The ladies' < prize was won by Miss Wilkinson with 112 points, Mrs Dunn being second with 103 points. Tlv* gentlemen's -nrizo was Won by Mr F. Ironside with .116 points. Mr H. Cox being s?oond with 109; points.. A dunco was afterwards held.
