A contract has been let to a Christchurch firm for the equipment for the St. Albans Children's playground. The amount is in the vicinity of £6OO. The equipment will not be crec.ted for about three monts. On account of slips the Main Toad from Birdling's Flat to Little Eiver will be closed to traffic until further notice. Notice is also given that owing to the unsafe condition of the Cashmere bridge, tho Cashmere road will be closed until further notice. A meeting was held in tho New Brighton Borough Council Chambers on Monday night, for tho purpose of receiving the report of a deputation which had waited on the Minister of Labour, the- Hon. G. J. Anderson, in connexion with the weekly half-holiday. It was decided to hold a meeting of business peoplo of the borough next week to further the holding ot a poll. A Gisborno telegram states that Radio Station 2AC operated by Ivan O'Meara, who has worked stations in 17 different countries, established twoway communication with a station in Algeria, a country never before worked by New Zealand operators. Tho station was BALG in Algeria, operated by a Frenchman. Both stations were operating on 37 metres. At tho meeting of tho Canterbury Philosophical Institute to bo held at Canterbury Collego to-night, Mr F. T. M. Kissel, Chief Electrical Engineer of tlio Public Works Department, will deliver an illustrated address on somo impressions of hydro-electrical development in countries visited by him. Mr Kissel is a graduate of the. Canterbury Coliege Engineering School, and has been associated with the development of tho chief hydro-electrical schemes in New Zealand. Tho appointment of a Deputy-Mayor has been giving tho Gisborno Borough Council some concern, a majority of the Council having desired an appointment which was not acceptable to the Mayor, who has refused a motion to give effect to their desires. Tho matter was referred to Mr Martin, counsel for the Municipal Association, who advises tho Mayor that he must receive the motion witn regard to the appointment, but the appointee can only act with his consent, or in tho event of tho Mayor becoming incapablo of acting. About two months ago tho Hon. Sir James Parr, Minister of Justice, intimated that important changes were being, made in the administration of tho Prisons Department, and that the change of policy would involve the closing of Waikeria as a prison, and its uso as a Borstal Institute. Tho prisoners at Waikeria havo now been transferred to farm work and ti-ee-pianting camps on pumice country near Tokaanu and Tanpo, and yesterday morning some sixteen youths from the Borstal Institute at Jnvercargdl passed through Wellington on their way to Waikeria.
The Wellington bra.nch of tho R.S.A. discussed the Dominion Council's findings on Colonel McDonald's charges, which in almost every case were sustained (says a Press Association telegram). Opposition was offered to.the Council's verdict, but the mover could not obtain a seconder. Colonel McDonald himself spoke and said that; in one case a document was falsified. Influence had been used to burke discussion. Eventually it was pointed outthat the Council still had tho matter in hand, and the.t the meeting could not do anything one way or the other, and tho view was accepted. During last winter tho hardest frost rocorded in Christchurch 'Was 15.3 degrees. After such an unusual spell of stormy weather as we havo just experienced, last year's record frost bids fair to' bo frequently beaten this winter.
