—* — CANTERBURY ASSOCIATION The eirrhth round of the Canterbury Association's matches was played on Saturday. Most of the primary schools' matches were postponed on account of the wet sia;e of the grounds, and the second and third grade matches at Sydenham Park were put off for the same reason. Selwyn B (0). The ground nt St. Albans Park was heavv and slippery before the game started, and a light rain commenced almost immediately-, and continued throughout the first spoil. ' Both teams were one man short, and the game was a poor exhibition of hockey. The opening stages were marked by a continuous attack by St. Albans, who were kept out of the goal by B. Hore and Dixon. Quartermain and Hale were responsible for a smart run, v.-hich saw Selwyn's goal in danger, and a couple of corners were taken without result. Hill and Neol put in u good run for Selwyn, but were stopped by Templeton. Hale and Franklin led the St. Albans attack to within Selwyn's circle, but Hilgrove relieved byhitting over. St. Albans • *eturned and a weak save by Guy gave Drayton an opening, but he shot wide. Half-time came with no score. Selwyn opened the attack in the second spell. Hore starling several promising rushes, which were spoilt by offside play by Macdonald. St. Albuns assumed the offensive, Quartermain being prominent in leading several combined attacks, which were stopped by Hilgrove and Dixon. Finally a solo effort by Quartermain enabled him to take the ball well down before passing to Franklin, the latter scoring the only goal of the match. St. Albans gained the upper hand for a time, and a penalty corner gave Quartermain an opening, but his shot went outside. The final score was: St. Albans 1, Selwyn B 0. Referees, Messrs R. Gracie and H. Luxton. Sydenham (2) v. Selwyn A (2). Selwyn were the first to attack. Then French and Holland broke through for Sydenham, but Mahoney relieved. The Bell brothers gained ground for Selwyn. but Richmond put behind. Sydenham attacked, Sherriffs taking the. ball into the circle, and opening their account with a good shot. Sydenham gained a penalty corner, but it proved fruitless. Selwyn set up a solid pressure, but Snooks saved well. A corner to Sydenham saw Holland put in a good shot, but it was blocked. Selwyn gained a penalty bully, but W. Bell failed to score Halftime came with the scores: —Sydenham 1, Selwvn A f). On resuming, play became fast and interesting. Snooks saved a good shot from Down. Sydenham lost a good opuortunity through Pragnell being offside. Richmond and W. Bell took play to the Sydenham circle, Skelton finally clearing. Sherriffs put in a good solo run for Sydenham, Mahoney

hitting out. A long hit by Skelton put Sydenham on the offensive again. Two corners, however, failed to improve their position. Sydenham were now having the better of the game, but Mahoney and Morris were defending well for Selwyn. Play was transferred to Sydenham's half, but a movement by L.' Cummings brought it back to midfield! Selwyn gained a corner, but the shot went behind. Mahoney then secured ami equalised the scores. Selwyn came asain and Bryden p\it in another goal from close ranee. A Sydenham rush saw Holland even the scores, Time was called with the scores reading two each. Referee, Mr C. Bellamy. Technical (2) v, 'Varsity (1). Even piny characterised the first spell, which ended with no score. 'Varsity secured in the second spell, and after a hard tussle in front of Technical'.' goal ■ Ford put them in the lead with a clinking shot v.-hich gave the goalie no chance. Technical pressed and strove hard to equalise the score. Kdgington finally put Technical on even terms with a good shot. The Technical forwards continued to attack, Mackie, the 'Varsity goalkeeper. effecting some tine saves. From one of those attacks, Gr.ieio, for Technical, secured the ball and scored from the rebound, putting his side in the lead. Time was called with no addition to the score. Referee, Mr 11. Throp. JUNIOR GRADE. Technical 12 (scored by Coffey 5, Hewinson n. Cockroft 2, Rogers and Sutherland) beat 'Varsity 1 (scored by Fitzgerald). Referee, Mr F. Sepie. Rangiora 3 (scored by Jeffreys 2 and Ross) beat Wesley nil. Referee, Mr L. Smith. • • The Trinity v. Sydenham match was put off. Selwyn 5 (scored by Edwards 2, Hamilton, Moore and Sandford) beat St. Albans nil. THIRD GRADE. Wharenui A 9 (scored by Edgington 3, Davis 2. Andrews 2 and Fleming 2) defeated Trinity B 2 (scored by Huskin and Mcf'ormick). Selwyn 4 (scored by Ewnrt 2 and Fletcher 2) beat 'Varsity 2 (scored by McDonald and Peters). Wesley 5 beat Rangiora 2. « Kaiapoi I! beat Technical 1. The Trinity A v. Sydenham B match was postponed. FOURTH GRADE. Svdenham A 6 v. Sydenham B 0. Technical B 6 v. Technical C 0. Trinity 2 v. Technical A 0. PRIMARY SCHOOLS. The only -Primary Schools' match played was between Lyttelton and Sydenham, the former winning by 4 goals to 1. LADIES' MATCHES. The only ladies' senior match was Rangiora v. Hinemoa, the former team winning by 4 goals to 1. JUNIOR GRADE. Bromley 7 (scored by Misses Basher 6 and Boyd) beat Hinemoa B 2 (scored by Misses Balshcr and Ashley). New Brighton 1 drew with Southbrook B 1. Digby's B defaulted to Hinemoa A. Technical 2 defeated Trinity 0. Aranui defeated Rangiora Physical Culture by two goals to one. IN OTHER CENTRES.

ASHBURTON ASSOCIATION. The ladies' hockey competitions were continued on Saturday. The grounds were greasy after tho heavy frost and rain, but in spite of this drawback good games were witnessed by a goodly number of spectators. The matches in both grades were the first in the second round. Following are the results: — Senior. Te Miharo carried too many guns for Hinds, and liad tho better of the game throughout, although Hinds played very pluckily. The absence of their captain and two or three other regular members was a severe handicap. Te Miharo played a good, sound game, but were deficient in clinching matters when the circle was reached. The scorers for Te Miharo were Misses B. Donaldson and M. Pluck. Mr M. Baker tvas referee. The match between High School Old Girls and Kakaia was a very even one, with a slight advantage in Hakaia's favour. In the later stages the plav alternated from one end to the other. Coals for High School Old Girls were shot by Misses (\ Bowden, M. Bel!, and M. Dixon, and for Rakaia by Miss K. Stewart. Messrs H. A. Humphries and C. Bishop were referees. Junior. Both Allenton teams which met on the Domain showed better form, and more teamwork was evident. The score™ were: For Allenton A, Misses M. Templeton (2). M. Hocking (,2), and G. Bushell; for Allenton B, Miss L. 'Willis. Messrs Humphreys and Bishop were referees. The game between Methven and Rakaia at Methven was a fairly good one. Methven again showed their superiority in hitting, and had better combination. The Rakaia players were inclined to ramble. ScoTers for Methven were Misses .T. Burrows, 1. Dalton, and D. Ireland. Mr A. G. Mcllardy refereed.
