LONDON WEATHER.

DENSE FOG IN CITY. Christchurch did its best to stage a real London fog yesterday. The usual early morning mist refused to disperse at the bidding of tho sun and a dull day followed. Shortly after 4 p.m. tho mist began to develop into a fog and by 5 o'clock there was a blanket oyer tho city. " •

In the evening it continued to roll up from, the river, and the night was extraordinarily black. At 9 o'clock it was impossible to see more than one street lamp at a time, and each singlo pedestrian was oppressed wjth a sense of isolation from nis fellows. Passersby loomed up suddenly a few yards in front and wire soon lost in tho blackness.

There was much "honking" of motorcars and drivers of all venicJes woreespecially careful. One accident was reported. Tramwayinen stated that tlxe north of the city area was clear, and ttyit the east aild south i were the parts most effected. After 9.30 there tras softie lifting of tlio fog and although street lights burned redly, the thrill of the "black out" Lad gone. Walkers on the Summit road yesterday were ■struck with the peculiar densitjf of th<? fog. Hie city seemed to be completely immersed in a layer of white mist, through which only the Cathedral spire, the destructor chimney, the gasometer, and clumps of trees penetrated. From the lighthouse it seemed that the sea had extended m from Pegastvs Bay and overwhelmed Christchurch completely.
