Mr J. Canning has arrived from Lyttclton in order to undertake diving operations for the Grcymonth Harbour Board.
Mr Daniel Reese, of Christchurcb, is visiting tho West Coast.
The staffs of the local banks entertained Mr F. E. Coote, manager of tho Bank of New Zealand at a dinner at tho Empire Hotel lass evening, prior to his departure for Wellington, where he will join the head office stnff. Mr A. X. Bakor, who presided, mado appreciative referenco to MrCooto's interest' in Rugby football, and on behalf of those present handed him a case of Loewe pipes. Messrs J. D. Deans (Coalgate), V. Deans (Sandown), and H." &XawrcMe (Christchurch) aro visiting the YTest Coast.
Dorothy, second daughter of Mr and Mrs James Howat, of Artburtown, was married to James, second son of Mr and Mrs James Woolhouso of Koitcrangi, at the Preabjtorian Chnrch, Hokitika. The Itov. B. Hatson officiated. Miss Mary llowat was bridesmaid, and Miss Edna Howat flower-girl. After tho ceremony'a reception was held at the residence of tho--" bride's parents, -and the htfppy couple Jeft later for Diinedin, where tho honeymoon will be spent.
Beefton Jockey Club. At tho monthly meeting of the Reef ton Jockey Club,. Mr A. Perotti presiding, it.was decided to advise the West • Coast Rugby League that the racecourao would not bo available for a match on June '2lst as "United (Greymouth) was playing a Rugby match against a Beefton team oa that diitc. It was resolved to advise the Association Football Club that it» charges would be reviewed at the end of the season, bnt if its account was settled promptly, £7 would be accepted. The chairman was elected to represent the club at the annual conference of tho < country racing clubs. Four new members were elected. It was resolved to accept Mrs Stallard's offer of. ground, with thanks.
Improvements at Prmakaflo. ' It is proposed to organise a working bee to improve tho access to the scenic attractions at Punakaiki, and . the Mayor (Mr W. H. Parfitt) has been asked to call a meeting with this object. Mining Matters. After.. several days of idleness, the Stato mines will resume production, tomorrow. The sinking of the South Bla*kwater Co.'s shaft at Hukawai has been commenced, and it is now down ten feet. The sinking is ia easy ground, and this iB expected to continue for'some considerable distance. Th« directors have decided to sink for a distance of 500ftbefore starting to open out, and when the shaft has been pat down for about GO feet, tenders will bo called for the rest. The tntting-off of a couple of corners on the Hukawai road has allowed the uie of a trolley for transporting timber to the mine, and this has proved a- great coaveaience to the company. A Dredging Claim.
Dredging operations arc to be recommenced at Jfa,ori creek, one o£ the richest fields in the district in the boom days. A dredge which was recently dismantled at the Ahanra. rir«r is being re-erected under the supervision of Mr G. Pcttigrew. Aa Auckland syndicate, of whieh Jlr P. N. Kingswcll is a member, has tuidcrtaken the enterprise.
