ELLESMERE. A special meeting of the' Ellesuicro County Council to consider the estimates for tho current year was attended : >y Cts. Cunningham (chairman), John Heslop, J. Nixon, A. Quiglcy, J. P. McEvedy and J. C Free. Tho estimated receipts in the general 'account, not including rates, totalled £I7OB lis. Tlio expenditure, including tho Council's contribution to. the upkeep of main highways, £2659 15s 5d for. hospital and charitable ajd and £1250 on account of new offices, was estimated to run into £7268 ISs 3d. . Loeston riding finished the year with a credit of £302 lis 6d. •With its proportional o share of general expenditure cf £2Oll 3s 4d, and new works £IM2 13s 3d, it waa found that the rate necessary to cover the expenditure would bo the same as last year, eleven-sixteenths of a penny in the '£. Irwell riding had a credit of £llß 13a 2d. Its proportionate share of expenditure to tho general account was. shewn as £1462 7s 4d and tho items of expenditure were amended to a. total of £232) 13s od. This left £930 11a Id for new works and necessitated the levying of a' rate of threefourtha of a penny_ in. the £, a. slight increase cm last year's rate. Scmthbridgo riding had a credit balance of £312 133 3d at March 31st last. Its proportionate share of tho general'expenses was shown at £IWSI 3s 7d.' "ho sum of £1464 Is 9d was set down for new works and maintenance to the riding, and the rate necessary to cover this estimated expenditure was tho samo as was collected last year, "nine-sixteenths of a penny in the £. The rates outstanding" at March 31st weTO shown as follows:—Leeston riding, £142 13s Id: Irwell ridinu, £l3 12s 8d; Southbndge riding, £73 7s 2d. Action, is being taken by legal process for the "ecovery- of these amounts, -which, if not collected by June SOih. will not bo subject to the Government subsidy. The water -works account was shown witn a credit of £67 7s Id, having recovered from • debit of £4O the year before. The same water charges will bo collected this year as last, owing to the Government regulations requiring all separate accounts to be kept in credit. The balance-sheet for the year ending March 31st last allowed that £B6 Is had been received from the Government on main highways account. The Main Highways- Board was shown to bo in debt to tho Council to the amount of £IOO 6s. The Selwyn-Lako road Government grant account showed that the Government grant of £IOO for last year was Btill due. Fresh grants for the Sohvyn-Lake road (£100) and Oakleigh tob<l (£100), each on a £ for £ basis, are to bo applied for.
