MEETING OF DOMINION

COUNCIL.

A meeting of the Dominion Council of the Workers' Educational Association was held in tho Trades Hall yesterday afternoon, Mr H. IX Aclaiul presiding. Others present were Messrs M. O'Kano (Wellington), Bernard Martin (Auckland), Dr. G*o. Thompson (Otago - ), Professor J. Shelley (Christchurch), and Mr Geo. Manning (Dominion secretary). The secretary reported that "the increased • grants made by the Government, and the increased donation of. £7.3 bv the A.S.R.S., had been distributed cquallv between the four district Councils. Tho Post and Telegraph Association, the Railway Officers' Institute, the New Zealand Educational Institute and the Watersiders'. Federation had been written to-and had intimated that their annual grants would, be made. A deputation consisting of Mr M. J. Forde and Professor Hunter had waited on the Grocers' Conference in Wellington and placed the work and tho financial needs of the Association before it. After discussion the confer-' ence decided to recommend its various branches to assist tho -movement A letter expressing the sympathy of. the movement to Mrs Massey in the death of her late husband had been sent by the secretary, who also represented the Dominion Council at the funeral. The. Education Department had. asked tho Dominion Council to appoint a representative to give evidence before tli« University Commission which will shortly be enquiring into the University system of this country; while a letter had been received suggesting that the Dominion Council consider the advisability of starting a broadcasting lecture service, for back-blocks or rural communities.

The.report was adopted,.. The draft ooustii-ution and amendment' were discussed, and finally incorporated in the constitution whirlr'wiil be sent to the four District Councils.

The publication of a W.E.A. journal. "N.Z. Highway," was agreed 'upon, and it is expected that tho first issuo will be printed in August. A sub-committee was set up to wait on the Education Department concerning the-possibility of establishing- d broadcasting system for %he purpose of conveying, lectures and concerts organ-; ised. by the movement to the rural areas.- ... ,

A, letter was received inviting .. the Association to give evidence before the University Commission on the working of the University system in the" Dominion.

■ It was decided that the Dominion Council should set u \>& sub-committee to outline- a policy desired by the W..12.A. movement, and to arrange for such to be placed before the members x oi the commission.
