MEETING OF COMMITTEE.
A meeting of the General Committee of the Canterbury A. and P., Association was held yesterday. Present: Messrs James Deans (chairman), J. 0. Coop, J. O. McGillivray, E. E. Alexander, John Deans, J. D. Hall, TV. Hayward, E. W. Lochhead, R. M. D. Morten, Eobert Ecid, D. W. Westcnra, H. E. Finehani, J. W. Foster, J. H. Grigg, J. G.Tlcrdman, F. Hubbard, E. E. Jenkins, W. J. Jenkins, 11. S. S. Kyle, L. Macfarlane, W. W. McEae, A. E, V. Morten, K. J. S. Murehison, W. H. Nicholson, John Nixon, JohnParlanc, J. 11. Stafford, Thomas Stevenson, Gordon Stoddart, and Sir George Clifford. • Mr J. W. Woodhouse, representing the Courtenay A. and P. Association, was also present. Apologies were.received from Messrs Chamberlain, N. Rutherford, G. Fulton, and H. E.Peryman.
A letter was received from the NewZealand Sheep Breeders' 'Association, offering shields worth £3 Ss for. the same classes as last year. It was decided to ask the donors if they would bo prepared to allow the shields to be used in connexion with the Eoyal Show this year. Several members of the Sheepbreeders' Association who were present signified their intention of agreeing to the request. It was decided to accept the invitation of the Canterbury Chamber of Commcreo to be represented at the dinner to be given to his Excellency the Governor-General on Tuesday night. \ Mr C. Morgan Williams wrote expressing regret at the action of the Association in turning, down a proposal to increase the classes'at the Eoyal Show in respect of Ayrshire, cattle. The chairman. said tho schedule- had gone before the Royal- Show Society, who had accepted what was recommended by the Association. In compiling the schedule the Association, had tried. to make the classes as uniform as possible. : It -was decided to. acknowledge the letter and to explain what tl>e Association had done in the matter. Mr J. A. Johnstone wrote regretting that better provision had not been made in respect of the classes for Corried'alc ewes witlTlambs at foot. The chairman said that the letter fell into the same category as that just dealt with, and it was. decided to write him in these terms. ,- • ,
The matter of arranging, judging competitions was-left.to the president and secretary. •' < ■• It was decided that entries for the Royal Show-should close : 26'days before the opening of the Show. A suggestion made by Mr Parlane that green feed should be supplied to exhibitors free of cost was referrcdvto the Finance Committee. The matter of .improved paddock accommodation for cattlo was referred "to. the Cattle Committee. - ;\ ■ ';
It was reported, -that both the Bail.way Department and the shipping companics<e6nccrned,'had;proinisod to assist the Association's far as possible in the matter, of'transport in connexion' with the Boyal, Sh6w. ; :', ' •..■'■ ; : , ' :-\ $ v'.A subcommittee was set up to go into the question of refreshments and:,entertainment of visitors at ttye Boyal Show. The committee was also 'erapowered to go into the question of commodation next' November. • - ; ,: -The chairman made ail appeal 'to members to give every assistance possible to the Association's "rerTfes'dnta tive, who was canvassing' for funds to improvo the Association's ground in connexion with the Boyal Show. A letter was received from the Genoral Manager of the New Zealand' Meat Producers' Board, stating that, in view of the interest the Association-took in the breeding of lambs, and in view of the Board's desire that the quality of these siiould.be' improved the Board was offering* special prizes. A copy was enclosod or! the report made by the London manager on the lambs recently shown there. The report.stated that the display v was considered as the best ever seen of New Zealand lambs at Smitbficld. It; was desired that as much publicity should be given the matter, so as to have aB many entries as possible at the Boyal Show. The chairman said that at the first Boyal Show at Palmerston North 33 entrios had been received,-and he would' like to see Canterbury improve on that this year. It was certainly' desir'able that Canterbury should make as good a showing of lambs as.possible, in view of the reputation of the province in this connexion.. It would bo difficult to get Canterbury, lambs ready by November to .compete with North Island exhibits, but he hoped that every possible effort would be made to make a good display.
