_ « HOPE OF RETURN BY AIR GIVEN UP. (BI CABLE— PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPTMQHT.) (AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION.) (Received June 9th, 8.30 p.m.) OSLO, June 8. The official meteorological and aeroplane representatives who wept to Spitzbergen in connexion with Captain Amundsen's flight, giving up hope of his return from the Polo by aeroplane, have returned to Bergen. AMERICAN HELP. AIRSHIPS TOO RISKY. (Received June 9th, 11.30 p.m.) WASHINGTON, Juno 9. Mr Wilbur (Secretary of Navy) declared that the Navy Department .waß not going to start on a wild goose chaße into the Arctic in response to the appeal of tho Norwegian Aero Club through tho North American Newspaper Allianco that the dirigible Los Angeles, or the Sbehnandoah, should attempt to find Amundsen. Ho said there wore two great practical difficulties. The Arctic temperature would cause the rain and snow to freeze in layers on the envelope of an airship and the tremendous extra weight-might cause a forced landing. Secondly, tye cold might freeze the lubricating oil of the engine. He indicated that three navjil amphibian aeroplanes attached to theMacMillan expedition, sailing from Boston on June 17, . would endeavour to find Amundseh.
