The fact that Maori War veterans had had to waij 50 years before being granted a pension was mentioned by one of the speakers at the King's Empire Veterans' luncheon at Auckland, but this .tardy.recognition was eclipsed at a later stage of the function, when the Hon. G. J. Garland said it had come to his knowledge that several men who had served in the Taranaki district in the Maori War had not even yet received a pension, states the "New Zealand Herald." "Were they not in the Armed Constabulary?" asked h voice. "It does not matter whether they were in the Constabulary or the Permanent Force," declared- Mr Garland. "If they have rendered service for their country then my best effortß are at their disposal,.and if I am given a list of those men, and their service can be traced, I will do my utmost to see.that they arc granted the pensions to which they are entitled," The assurance was greeted with loud ypplauae from the veterans.
