HOUSING LOAN.

NO MONEY AVAILABLE. The City Council last night received a letter from the Superintendent, State Advances Office, in reference to the workers' dwelling loan of £20,000 recently applied for, and stating that the demands made on the funds of the office precluded it from, at present, entertaining an application. Cr.'W. H. Winsor: What is the good of the Act! Cr. McCombs moved that the letter be received and that tho incoming Council send a deputation to Wellington. She said she could not understand why Christchurch should be treated so badly in comparison with Auckland. The Council owed it to the city to make all efforts to secure justice. Cr. H. T. Armstrong, M.P., said the incoming Council should go Into the matter. Auckland had received large advances last year, and he could not understand why that should be so and Christchurch denied everything. Cr. C. Carr said it was evident that the available funds were insufficient, and the Government should be induced to secure further funds for housing loans. ~ , Cr. W. E. Leadlcy said the Government might have made it a policy to refuse advances to municipalities in order to provide more money to the Advances Department, in order to compete with the privatfc money-lender. Cr. E. J. Howard, M.P., said the Council should approach the political head of the Department, and not rest content with the letter from the superintendent.
