TREATING CANCER.
AN ONUS ON PATIENTS. How the new activity of the Christchurch Hospital in the radium treatment of cancer is progressing was briefly chronicled ill the report of the Medical Superintendent (Dr. Walter Fox), submitted to the North Canterbury Hospital.Board at its meeting yesterday.
Dr. Fox stated that the new scheme, under the control of the deep therapy and radium department, started operations in November, and as was expected, sufferers presented themselves in plenty. The results of deep therapy had justified the opinions furnished by tho honorary staff and himself, namely, that the Board was not to expect too much for deep therapy treatment. In certain classes of cases radium, on the other hand, was producing excellent results.
The chairman (Mr H. J. Otley) said that it Wfs very essential that the public, in town and country, should realise the injportanco of the innovation. The essential thing to remember was that cases must bo treated as soon as the first symptoms were noticed or suspected. There were too many cases in the Hospital at the present time where tho patients had delayed too long seeking treatment. People had no reason to be afraid of radium. Another member added that it was important for country people to know that the same facilities for treatment existed for them as for townspeople.
