GREYMOUTH. April 20,

Mrs Bennett, of Sale street, Ilokitika, is an inmate of the Westland Hos pital, where she is under treatment.

Mr 11. Coppersmith, formerly Mayor ot Runanga, is visiting Greymouth. Major Addington, of England, who is spending a holiday in Now Zealand, leit Greymouth this morning for Christcliureh.

Mr C. A. Mathieson, chief postmaster at Greymouth, received notice on Saturday of his promotion to a similar position at Xapier. He will probably leave to take up his new. position in about y. fortnight, and will be succeeded by Mr D. M. Mcintosh, postmaster at Dannevirke.

Mr T. E. Y. Seddon has returned from South Westland. He visited the whole of the district from Haast to Wailio.

A numbev of Roman Catholic clergy, including the Rev. Fathers Price and Cooney and the Very Rev. Dean O'Donnell, arrived this afternoon from Canterbury to attend the funeral of Father Riordan, at Ross. All of the West Coast clergy south of Reefton will be present.

Mr A. Wills, who leaves for Wellington to-morrow on transfer in tho Railway Department, was tendered a, farewell this evening, and presented with a travelling rug and cigarette-holder. Mr T. Scully, of ChristchuiJ-h, is acting as wharf foreman during the absence on holiday of Mr J. Milne.

Schools Eft-open. Tho attendance at the Grcymoutli Main School to-day was very little below normal. An address was given by the Hev. J. P. Martin, who expressed the relief of parents at the passing of the epidemic. Tiiere was also a good attendance at the v,obden and Technical Schools, and at thj latter there were a number of enrolments. Croquet. In the final of the Peace Bowl, of the MaJtura Croquet Club, Mrs Whiblcy defeated Mrs James. Municipal Election. The Greymouth Eatepayers' Association is issuing a report in which it asks the ratepayers to support the eight members of the old Council seeking reelection, and the candidature of Mr .T. B. Kent, who is to be nominated by thp Association to fill tho vacancy of Cr. A. Armstrong. Mr A. B. Spiers has been elected Mayor of Kumara unopposed, and tho following being the only nominee's for the Borough Council, they have been elected:—Messrs Edward- Martin, Charles E. Evendon, Walter J. Benyon, Theodore Saraty, "William Stewart, Robert Burrell, John Me-Farlane, Peter McDonald, and Allen McNabb.

Mr A. B. .'Spiers has been elected unopposed .as represcnattive of the borough on the We3tland Hospital Board. District Matters. Mr J. 0 'Brien, M.P., has been advised by the Minister of Education that the Canterbury Education Board, to whom tho request for a school at Coal Creek was referred, had refused to make a grant. However, if the position had changed since the report was made, he was prepared to give the- matter further consideration. Advice has also been received by Mr O'Brien from the Minister of Railways to the effect that a locomotive depot, for which.plans are being prepared, will Jbe erected at Elmer Lane at an early date. Sunshine and Bain. For the week ending Sunday, 128 points of rain fell at Hokitika, and tho sunshine aggregated 25 hours 42 minutes. . A Collision. Two cars came into collision at Hokitika yesterday, and both were considerably damaged. Mr John Ritchie, one of the occupants, was badly cut about the face by flying glass. League Football. The fortnightly meeting of the West Coast Rugby League was held to-night, Mr A. H. McKane presiding over a large attendance of delegates. Several of the delegates reported substantial contributions towards the travelling expenses of the Inangahua Club. Mr Saunders, delegate at the New Zealand Council's annual meeting, submitted his report, and it was decided to support the recommendation to devote a day's takings to the Council. The resignation of Mr A. Webster as delegate was received, and it was resolved to ask him to reconsider his decision.

It was decided to accept the affiliation of an Inangaliua junior team. Tho Greymouth Club's protest against Runanga, wlio were alleged to havo played two seniors in a junior game, was dismissed, but it was resolved to replay the match at Greymouth. L. Robertson and I. Olson were reinstated.

It was agreed, to play three rounds in the senior competition, two in the junior, and three in the third grade'. It was resolved to inaugurate the schools competition, nominations to be received by next meeting, and it was agreed to procure a football for each team nominating.
