There" was a large ' gathering ,of householders in the Shirley School on Tuesday night for the purpose of extending a welcome home to the headmaster, Mr "W. Balch and Mrs Balch, who have just returned from an eight months' trip to England and the Continent. ; ■ ■ ■ > . ■ MrC. S.' Thompson, chairman of the School Committee, presided, and made a. speech of welcome on behalf of the householders. He was supported in his remarks by Mr W'.E. Simes, and several others also spoke. Opportunity was also . taken to acknowledge • the services, by a suitable presentation; of Mr C. S.Pratt, who had acted as headmaster during Mr Balch 's absence. .Tho evening took the, form of a progressive euchre party, with- musical items' interspersed.
