SPRINGS-ELLESMERE. Monday's meeting of the SpringSrEllesmere Electric Power Board was attended by Messrs J. Cunningham (chairman), G; Maginness, J. A. Henley, A. Langdale Hunt, J. W. Kingan, E. T. McMilfan, J. C. Free, J. ■ W. Kime, E. H. Kowell, and J. T. Simpson. Messrs F. S. Jarmari (secretary), and L. C. Vicary (engineer) were in attendance. ... ',•'..■
The matter of purchasing, a. new : motortruck was left in the hands, of a committee, comprising Messrs .'Hunt, Maginness, and McMil'ah.' , -.' • Mr Free asked that the Inwood's road extension should be proceeded with as soon as possible, the peop'.tf to be sefvefl having had their premises wired up. The engineer said that the shortage of poles was holding up' this extension, which would be proceeded with, as'soon as poles came to hand. ..,:..
Messrs Hunt, Maginness, Henley, Kingan', and Simpson were authorised to inspect, and if considered suitable, purchase a section of land and shed at Templeton for the use of the Board.
It was agreed that the chairman, •Mr Maginness, and • the engineer should confer with representatives from the Wa'imairi | County Council on Monday -next, at Harewood, regarding the supply of current to people adjacent to the boundaries ,of the county'and power district. ■ . i ,:Tho Minister ..of PuMio /Works .acknowledged receipt of a copy of the resolution changing the name of the Board to the .Mid-Canterbury Electric Power' Board. 'He promised to consider the Smarter. It was decided to invite applications for the position' of foreman for constructional work in the Paparua-area. - " Permission was granted by the Minister of tublic Works to boirpw by way of over-' draft to cover loss on operating exoenses. Tenders for the supply of, transformers were accepted as follows: Messrs A. S. Paterson and Co., four 100k.v.a. at £3BB, one 150-k.v ; a., three-phase at £137 2s, one 75-k.v.a. ■ three-phase at £93 17s, one 60<-k.v.a. three-phase £BB 2s'6d, one -40-k.v.a., three-phase £6S 10s. Messrs Tumbull and Jones, Ltd., three 5-k.v.a., £75; twelve 3-k.v.a. ; £242 8s; nine 2-k.v.a., £l6O 4s;-nine-l£-k.v.a., £144. ;■•- The matter cf exchange on cheques was brought up by Mr Maginness, who said that ■ when construction work "was started in the Paparua area a considerable number of payments would have to be maue in that district, and if cheques on a Leeston bank were issued exchange would have to be Paid when these were cashed in Christchurch. He did not see why «ne branch of a bank ' could not cash cheques drawn on another j branch of the same bank without charging j exchange. The practice tended to force people to do their banking business in the large.! towns instead of in the country, where there | was not the same congestion. The matter was' discussed with the local bank manager, who could offer no 6ohihon of the difficulty except the opening of an account in a Christchurch bank.
