BANDS CONTEST.

RECORD ENTRIES . FOR AUCKLAND FIXTURE.

(speci.Ui to ''the rsiss. ; AUCKLAND. November 10. The New Zealand Band Contest, to take place in Auckland next February, promises to be easily the biggest assembly of the sort that has ever taken place in the Dominion. The entries in many casc3 constitute a record, and the success of the meeting is assured, providing only it is favoured with fine weather. In all, thirty-one bands, excluding all local bauds, will visit the city to participate in the contest. This means the invasion of approximately a thousand bandsmen for a week, and the committee is considerably exercised over the matter of procuring accommodation for so large a number. Captain Los. Andrews, V.C., N.Z.S.C., has been appointed judge for the quickstep events, and will have a number, of efficient members of the Defence staff to assist him. The detail arrangements for the contest are well in hand. Sixteen bands have entered for the "A" grade championship of the Dominion, including one Australian band, the Malvern Tramways Band, which is a noted colonial combination.

The New Zealand bands aro as follows: —Woolston, Port Nicholson Silver Band, Hauraki Regiment, Christchureh Municipal Band, Palmers-ton North Municipal Band, Wellington Municipal Tramways Band, Kaikorai Baud, Wanganui Garrison Band, the Auckland Artillery Band, Canterbury Mounted Ritlc s Regiment Band, Invercargill Battalion Band, Queen Alexandra's Own Regiment Band (Wanganui), St. Kilda Municipal Band, Timaru Garrison Band, and Invercargill Hibernian Band. The following seventeen bands have entered in the "B" grade class: — Waratah Municipal Band (from Australia), Auckland Temperance Guards Band, Onehunga Municipal Band, Hamilton City Band, Waihi Federal Band,"Feilding Citizens' Band, Auckland Waterside Workers' Band, Whangarei Band, Winton Municipal Band, Taranaki Regimental Band, Waikato Regimental Band, Dunedin Artillery Band, New Plymouth Citizens' Band, Danncvirkc Band, Gisborne City Band, Grcymouth Municipal Band, and Port Auckland Band. The following nine bands havo entered for tho "C" grade, or third class: —Birkenhead Municipal Band, Te Awamutu Band, Ponsonby Boys' Band, Papatoetoe Band, Otahuhu Band, Takapuna Band, Tauranga Band, Devonport United Band, and Te Aroha Municipal Band. The solo events are particularly heavy, and in | many instances must create a record for New Zealand band contests. The following are the en-tries:—-BB cornet championship of New Zealand 58 entries; EB cornet 17; BB cornet 61; flugel horn 22; tenor horn 39; BB baritone 26; BB euphonium 38; BB trombone 18; B bass 39; 888 bass 27; side-drum 15; bass drum 11; quartet 38; trios 19; boys' events 42. In. tho hymn test event 37 bands have entored.-

TO "TEE PBJI88.") ■■ -| ■ ■' ' ■ DUNEDIN, November 15. ■ A cablegram has, been, received' by the Exhibition Company from : Sir James Allen intimating that the following binds can' ho made available for the Exhibition: —Koyal Dragoons Second Battalion, East Yorkshire Regiment Second. Battalion, Scottish Eiflea, Cameronians' First Battalion, Duko of Cornwall's Light Infantry Second Battalion, South Lancashire Prince of Wales Volunteers' First Battalion, .Royal Highlanders' Black Watch Second Battalion, Essex Kegiment First Battalion, Sherwood Foresters' First Battalion, North Lancashire Royal Regiment Second Battalion, King's ftoval Rifle Corps Second Battalion, Wiltshire Begiment First Battalion, York and Lancaster Begiment First Battalion, Gordon Highlanders' Second Battalion, Boyal Ulster Rifles First Battalion. The Prince of Wales' Volunteers First Battalion, Wiltshire Begiment First Battalion, and York and Lancaster Begiment First Battalion have special historical connexion with New Zealand. ■ .
