At the Supreme Court, Walter McCarthy pleaded not guilty to theft, receiving stolon goods, and wilfully attempting to defeat the oourae of justice arising from the theft of eleotrical-material from Tnrnbull and Jones's -warehouse for which another man already • has been .convicted. During the hearing, the allegations of theft were withdrawn. Counsel for the defence said in reference to. As regards -the other artioles, accused did not know they were stolen. ■ After foul hours' retirement, _ the jury brought in a verdict of not guilty of at-' tempting to defeat the. ends, of justice and failed to agree on the receiving charge. A new trial he held on Monday.
