WOOL TRANSPORT.
RAILWAY METHODS CRITICISED. Sonie strong comment 1 on railway business management was made at the last meeting of the Malvern. County Council when a letter from the District Traffic Manager regarding wool transport was being considered.
The Manager wrote: "In this connexion I would respectfully remind you that it is to your own interests, and those of the wholo community, that the railway owned by the public should be utilised by the public. I oan assure you that every endeavour will be made to provide an ample> supply of trucks to fill your requirements." • According to the report of the meetirtg supplied to I 'us, members expressed themselves as being fully aware of the desirability of making full use of the railway service, but that an ample ply of .trucks was nqt the only essential in meeting the competition of motor service generally. The latter helped with the loading and unloading, whereas the Railway Department did nothing unless paid extra for it. As far as the public could judge, the Department was not understaffed, yet, except in rare instances, no hoping hand was given. There was no real evidence of a desire to servo th«? users of the railway in a manner conducive to business, and the keeping of it. Much as the Council deplored the damage dbne to roads by the carriage of goods by lorries, against the railways, it could not blind itself td the fact that it rested with the Department to supply a prompt, courteous, and efficient service "bsfore ratepayers could .or would give support tp a business", even though vitally interested. It was always a question of. the survival of the Attest.
