ELLESMERE. . Mu-nday'a meeting of the Ellesmers County Council was attended by Crs. J. Cunningham (chairman), John Heslop, A. Quigley, and John Nixon.
Mr G. S. Manson, tenant of tho Council's [ reserve at Lakeside, known as Hall's Pit, attended to explain what he intended, to do in tho mitter of clearing' gorso on tho reserve, about which complaints had been received. He reported having had tho go.rss rolled down by a • traction engine, and thai within a week he would have it burnt, and would fhen proceed' with grubbing. 1 Ins- would remove the. .danger to Mr F. Alexander's property adjoining. The Council decided to deter takieg further action until next, meeting on Mr. Malison undertaking to have the clearing satisfactorily carried out in the. meantime, Mr JJ, J. Kelleher (Southbridge) saw the Council in reference to an order calling up>n him to clear gorso from his road frontages. Ho stated that he had cleared his aide. of the road two years ago, but that the Coiin-" cil had not grubbed the oppesrte side for 20 ' years, and that the seeds''had spread to his "side. -He suggested that-tho Council should have an. inspection'made. The engineer undertook lo .inspect the roads and report at next meeting. The annual balance-sheet, whiah had been pai-sed a3 correct by the Government Audit Office, was considered and finally adopted. Jt was. agreed that the chairman should confer with the chairman, of tho Leeston Town • Board in regard to tho lighting of the county war memorial. Mr J. McDermott, district telegraph engineer, and the Hon. Sir R. Hcaion Khod-S acknowledged the Council's letters asking thnt facilities for direct-, telephone < commu-, nication ■ between Leeston and Dunaandel should be provided. . Sir.' Heaton promised to do. ibis best in the matter. The chairman said that Mr J. Boag, of Middlerigg, Broofesidey had made 'application, for a connexion with the Leeston exchange. "When this was made there, would be. a- gap of only two miles to bo erected to complete .tho direct line between Leeston and Dunaandel. Several. objections were received to Mr G.. W. R. Osborne's application for the opening of a new drain to iako water from lud f-arrn. and the. matter was lield over for a month, so that the objectons could be heard.
Tho Canterbury Automobile Association thanked tho Council for the good work carried ou*. on the Main Soutii road at Selwyn.
It was reported by the clerk that the general rates outstanding totalled £2915, and water rates £326.
Tenders were accepted as follows:—Formation of Greenslade's road, Irwell, H. Hood, at £1 per chain; shingling the same road, Pi. Burnett, at 2s 3d per cubio yaid; 3hinglmg Lower Lake road to Woody creek, R. Burnett, at 3s per cubic yard.
