OPOSSUM TRAPPERS.
♦ (special to "the press.") WELLINGTON, October 31. A question with regard to the license fee paid by opossum trappers was asked in- the House of Representatives today by the Leader of the Opposition, who said that the license fee of £.2 10s was fixed when the prices of skins averaged from 10s to 12s, whereas they now averaged 6s 9<*l, and a royalty of Is a skin was payable in the Wellington district. The number of skins taken in 1923 was 42,000- This year 40,000 had been taken. The Forestry Department got half the revenue received, though the great majority of the skins came from private properties. He urged that it was a large toll to take one-sixth of the price of a skiii by way of royalty. The Hon. R. F. Bollard said that was the first time lie had heard anything about the royalty being too great. He had not been approached on the matter. However, lie would have it looked into. -
