* POSITION IN AUSTRALIA. NO DECISION BY UNIONS. (BY CABLE—PHESS ASSOCIATION —COrTP.IGHT' (Australia* and n.s. cable association-.) (Received October 31st. .8.43 p.m.> MELBOURNE, October "1. When the compulsory conference called by the President of the Commonwealth Arbitration Court met to-day to discuss the threatened waterfront trouble, the representatives of the Waterside Unions stated that nothing had been decided upon by the unions. Yclm were awaiting results of meetings in other places before deciding upon ac' ion. No claims had been made on the employers, nor eould they yet tell what claims would be urged. No conference could be held when it was impossible to inform the Court as to any dispute which was likely to occur. The President told the parties that, so far as the Court knew of the claims, they could be settled by constitutional means. Ho advised them r.ot to attempt to enforce their demands by direct action, and the proceedings closed.
