A SMART ARREST.

GOOD WORK OF OAMABTJ POLICE. (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) OAMAHTJ, March 31.« Another smart arrest was effected pi tho vinii'itv of Oamaru late this afternoon. Word was received early iu the day .by tho local police from Dunedin that a man named Edward Stephen Laws, alias Thomas Hunter, who was wanted for the theft of a savings bank book and forgery of nam© on a withdrawal slip for £75, was believed to be travelling northward. On leaving the police station shortly before five o'clock this afternoon Constable Abel noticed a Dunediu taxi speeding past the station bound north. The constable gave chase in an Oamaru taxi, and overtook the Dunedin car eight miles out of town, and found the wanted man. While being searched, Laws bolted over a fence, and Genge, tho taxi driver, and the constable gave chaso in the car, going clean through a hedge. Laws was quickly recaptured and lodged in the Oamaru lock-up. This arrest adds another creditable performance to the worlj of the Oamaru police. During tho past twelve months four gaol breakers have been recaptured, and severa.l other ' wanteds have been apprehended, while the escaped murderer Matthews was run to earth by the local police.
