THIRTEENTH DAY. The Chiiistchurch Literaiy and Musical Competitions are now drawing to e, close. Last night the judges, in announcing the results, took' tho occasion to thank tho officers o£ tho Society, and also the public who hadi attended tho competitions, for the courteous treatment given them. The competitions had dono much good, and the judges ad'viaed the competitors to adhere"to the great masters; they, anight be hard, hut perseverance in tho 'Bt\idy of i them would bring perfection. Unique interest is attached to a piee« of phosphate rock from Nauru Islnnl which was presented to the Prime Minister by the directors of the Farmers' Fertiliser Company on Saturday (says the Auckland "Herald"). The specimen was a, portion of a lump of rock taken to Sydney from Nauru Island prior to the phosphate, deposits J)ein£ discovered. This rock was thought to be petrified wood, and was exhibited by the owner to his friends as such. It was left for Mr A. F. Ellis to diseoyur the nature of the curio, by subjecting a piece of it to analysis. Ihe development, of the deposits at Nauru Island and Ocean Island was subsequently undertaken. Mr Ellis, who still lias the original lump of rock, was present at the-opening of the Farmers' Fertility;: Company's works at Te l'apapa on Saturday*
