MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS.
CITY NOMINATIONS. Nominations closed yesterday at noon for election to the Mayoralty and the Christchurch City Council, and also for the city representation on the North Canterbury Hospital and Charitable Aid Board and the Lyttelton Harbour Board. The elections will take place on April 27&. The nominations are as follows (C representing a nominee of the Citizens' Association; L of the Labour Representation Committee; and I an independent candidate): —

Cr. J. W. Beanland, Deputy-Mayor, will address meetings of electors as fol-lows:—To-night, Brougham street Hall; Wednesday,. Rugby street; Thursday, Waltham Behoof; Friday, Beekenham Hail. AH meetings will commence at 8 p.m. Dr. Thacker will address meetings today as under:—Kaiapoi Factory employees, Allen street, at noon; St. Mark's schoolroom, Opawa, 7.30 p.m.; Hibernian Hall, 8.30 p.m. Ors. Israelson and E. A. Leaver, who ore offering themselves -as candidates for re-eleotion to the New Brighon Borough Council, will address the electors in the Pier Hall to-night, at 8 o'clock. The Mayor (Mr F. Kibblewhite) has consented to take the chair.
"NO TOUTING." PROPOSED POLICE ACTION. "This is the last meeting of the present Council," said the Mayor, Dr. Thacker, at the. opening of the Council meeting last night, "and we are now coming to a Council election. There is one law that I would like to Btate was proved to be correct laßt time, namely, that no touting is allowed during the election, and that the issue of lists of candidates is illegal. I believe if such lists are used this time the police are going to express an opinion about it." Cr. J. A. Flesher: Do I understand you to Bay the police are going to interfere in regard to the issue of lists of candidates?
The Mayor: Three days before the election. Cr. Flesher: I think the police are very. ill-advised, and .whoever prompted this action are leading the police on the wrong track. If the police will read the -.Local Elections Act they will find they have no power to prevent the issue of lists of candidates on the day of. election. You cannot issue anything showing how people should vote, but it is periectly legal for the Labour Party to issue ft - list of their candidates, and the Citizens' Party also. The police have no right to take any such action as you suggest. _ Cr. Sullivan t We have never raised any such question. Cr Flesher: I don't think you have, but it is most improper for the Mayor to put forward such a misleading stateThe Mayor: We will see. what the constable says. Cr. Flesher: We will take the conseCr Agar: Do I understand that you as Mayor have instructed the police to take this action? . The Mayor: No, I didn't. I only give you what I have heard. Or. C. S. Harper: Didn't you say the nolica would take action P The Mayor: No. I said the police were likely to take action. Cr. Agar,: The police will know hotter than to do that.
EANGIOBA. Nominations for the Rangiora Mayoralty and borough councillors closed at nt Cr J? S B. Lane, being the only candidate nominated, was declared duly elected Mayor. Mr Lane has been a resident of the borough for 33 years, and has been in business for many years as a jeweller and watchmaker. Ho has always taken a very keen interest in nil matters connected with Uhe welfare of the borough. Eight years ago he was elected to tho Council, being amongst the highest on the poll, and at each sucoeedine election he has been elected, and has either headed tho poll or beon second. For seven years no has been chairman of the Finance Committee, and during the absence of the Mayor, Mr C. I. Jennings, last year, Mr Lane acted in his stead. Mr Lane is the representative of the Rangiora Borough Council on the Waimakariri Harbour Board. He will also have a seat on the Rangiora High School Board and the "Waikuku Domain Board. Nino nominations were received for seats on the Borough Council, and as that was the number required, all were elected. Seven are members of the old Council. Mr H. Boyd, piobably the oldest councillor, did not seek re-elec-tion, and Mr W. J. Rouse is at present visiting England. The following are the new Council:—Messrs C. S. Ayers, W. Allison, H. A. Archdall. C. I. Jennings, R. Mcintosh, W. L. Murray, W. A. Rowsa, A. H. Tyer, and C. R. Thwaites. Messrs R. Mcintosh and C R. Thwaites are the two new councillors. The former is well known as the president of tho Northern Agricultural and Pastoral Association, and is a retired fanner.

Page, W. H. Robinson, J. E. Rule, W. H. Woods. The first-named eight are the present sitting members. The ninth member is Mr A. J. Grigg, who is not seeking reelection. With the union of Hamustead with the borough, the number, of members has been increased from nine to eleven. One member is to be elected on the Ashburton Hospital Board, and the candidates nominated are Messrs F. \\. Watt (the present member) and G\ W. Andrews (a former member).
IN OTHER PLACES. (PEaSS ASSOCIATION TELBGEAMB.) AUCKLAND, April 18. Mr J. H. Gunson, the present Mayor of Auckland, was again retained, unopposed. There are fifty nominations for seats on the City Council. GISBORXB, April 18. For the Mayoralty, Messrs George Wildish (the present Mayor), I. Mirfield, and G. 0. lUunns have been nominated. NAPIER, April 18. Messrs J. V. Brown, M.P.. and J. B. Andrew, a retiring councillor, have been nominated for the Mayoralty. There are 16 nominations for the Borough Council. "WELLINGTON, April 18.. Owing to a fear of vote •splitting in the city Mayoralty election, the Hon. T. W. HTsTop has decided to withdraw from the contest in favour (if Mr R. A. Wright, H.P., who will be Mr Hickey'? only opponent. Mr Hislop will stand for the City Council. For the City Council, 42 nominations have been received, including a complete Labour ticket. There are nine nominations for four vacancies on the Harbour Board. A Labour ticket is nominated. There are 23 nominations for the 14 Hospital Bonrd seats. TIMARfT, April 18. Messrs F. J. Rolleston and \V.. Angland were nominated for the Mayoralty vice Mr W. C. Raymond retired, whilst 27 nominations were received for the 12 seats on the Borough Council. DUNEDIN. April 18. Or. J. S. Douglas was elected Mayor of Dunedin unopposed. Twenty-six candidates have been nominated for tho twelve councillors' seats.
INVERCABGILL, April 18. "- Messrs John Stead, (retiring Mayor) and Councillor J. F. Lillicrap have nominated for the Mayoralty. For the 12 seats on the Council, there are 17 candidates.
