R. Arnst, the well-known sculler, leaves this evening for Wellington. The Hon. W. Downie Stewart, Minister of Internal Affairs, will remain in Xhinedin for a week at least.
Mr Hansen, who has been general manager of the Avon dairy Co. since its inception nine years ago, has retired from that position.
MrW. "Cairo" Bradley, who was well known for his work among the soldiers in Cairo and Alexandria, passed through Christchureh at the week-end. He will be at Ashburton for a week or ten days, giving "campaign talks." Mr George Harper, who has juflt resigned the position of foreman of works for the Woolston Borough Council, was presented by the borough employees last Friday with u beautiful silver watch, winch bore an appropriate inscription.
The death of Mr George Barrell, a committeeman of the West Chrtstchurch District High School for many years, was referred to with regret in the committee's annual report presented to the householders' meeting last night. The. meeting passed a resolution of condolence, with the .relatives of the deceased.
Mr J. Moodie, of South Canterbury, has been appointed agricultural instructor under the Canterbury Education Board with headquarters at Christchurch. Before leaving Tiraaru, Mr Moodie was the recipient of, numerous presentations. A representative gathering of teachers gave him a travelling the Marist Brothers a silvermounted blackthorn walking stick, the Floral Society a fountain pen, the Timaru High Schools' teachers also a fbuntain pen, Geraldine High. School combined pocket and fruit knife and silver thimble for Mrs Moodie, the Education Board technical staff a silver matchbox suitably inscribed, and from the Timaru Main School teachers a leather-bound illustrated volume on Gardening and a morocco leather pocket-book. The Minister of Education (Mr C.. J. Parr), when visiting South Canterbury recently, was greatly impressed with the experimental plots in that district. He said they were the finest he had seen, and added that South Canterbury was exceedingly fortunate in having Mr Moodie as agricul-' tural instructor.
Mr J. S. Douglas, who was elected yesterday unopposed as Mayor of Dunedin, was born in that city in 1872. He was a member of the Dunedin City Guards until the close of the Volunteer syßtem, and received all efficiency medals, including the officers' decoration. At the inauguration of the Territorials he was appointed major, and was transferred from the reserve under the new regulations in 1920, to t the retired list. He had a total continuous military service of 31 years. He was president of the Dunedin Employers' Plumbers' Union for over 15 years, and was appointed by the Minister of Public Health a member of the Plumbers ' Registration Board of New Zealand in 1913. He has since been reappointed on two occasions. He was for some years chairman of the Dunedin Drainage Board, and was elected a member of the City Council in 1913, and for the laßt two years has been chairman of the Tramway Committee. He has also been a member of the Otago Harbour Board and th» Dunedin Licensing Committee. The last occasion on which there was a walk-over for the Mayoralty of Dunedin was in 1912.
