* MAGISTRATE'S COURT. Mr S. K. McCarthy. S.M., presided at the Magistrate's Court yesterday. Robert Allen Pnion, charged with beir.e/ found drunk in the public bur of the Hoval Hotel, was convicted and fined as, iu default i< hours' imprisonment.
Richard Henry Wakelin was charged with having used obscene language in a- publio place, to wit, the bar of the Mitre Hotel. He was further charged with that, being l quarrelsome, he did refuse to quit tbo bar of tho Mitre Hotel when requested to do so by the licensee. He pleaded guilty to both charges. Senior-Sergeant Jackson said that defendant was a raarrier}. man with seven children. Ho had a relative working in the hotel with whom he was on bad terms, and on the occasion in question he had entered tliG bar and endeavoured to pick a. quarrel with him. Accused was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon, and u prohibition order was issued against him at his own request. Robert Laudy, charged with using obscene language iu Oxford street, nleadcd not guilty. Constable Hedging gave evidence that he heard (ho accused arguing with another roan at the corner of Oxford street end ?forwich qvay. Accused repeatedly used obscene laugi.flgn, within the hearing of women and children. Senior-Sergeant Jackson said that accused had been fined £S for a similar offence- in November hfat. The Magistrate: You have acted with your own free will in setting your tongue free, and also settinff your very filthy .mind free. Accused : I don't believe it. The Magistrate: Ob, of course not. You feilows are never in 4he wrong. It it always the police and magistrates who are in the wrong, according to you. You were fired before and it evidently did you no good, b.> this time you will bo -sentenced to one months imprisonment. John Howard, alias McDonald, wss charged witli disordered beharoiour while drunk. Ho nlcaded not guilty. Constable Hodgius said he saw the accused bail up three men ou the British Hotel comer, including the previous accused, Landy; and he later followed Landy into the Pol joe Station,' where he was arrested. The Magistrate warned accused to leavo people alone when he was under the influence of liquor, and fined him £2, in default seven days' imprisonment. Herman Malm was charged with using indecent language at the comer of Exeter and Oxford streets. He pleaded not guilty. Accused was bound over to keep the peace for twelve months, self in £SO and two sureties of £25 each. He was given seven days in which to find security, aud was warned* that if he did not find it he would go to gaol. Accused 1 : All right, I'll go to gaol. Accused when leaving tho Court,' made a. remark to one of tho police witnesses, and was informed by the Magistrate if he spoke again before getting out of the courthouse ho would bo committed for contempt of Court,
PRESENTATION. In tk® Bowling- Club's pavilion last evening a. largo number of members assembled to bid farewell to the, Bev. H. L. Frost, who is leaving- this week for Auckland. Mr J. Garrard, president of the> chili, handed to Mr Frost a silver-mounted walking-stick for himself, and a silver ivase for Mrs JTrost. He referred, to Mr Frost's' good qualities n» a bowler, and expressed the regret of members at his departure from tho Port. Mr Frost suitably responded.
