"When the Auckland Racing Club installed the electric totalisator at EHcrslie, some lew years back, it was thoughtth.it it would sene for a considerable period. But though the. machine at pro-, fcent iu use performs -jvondcrful work, it | is recognised that if Ellerslie is to be quite up to date in controlling the totalisator business in a thoroughly satisfactory manner, no time should bo lost in securing a machine of the latest type, and the A.lt.C. Committee last week practically decided on making a contractwith, the Automatic Totalisator Company of New South "Wales for the construction of a machine at Elierslie equipped with all the latest improvements. The new instrument, -which, of course, will be electrically driven, provides tor three totalisators, which will be at different points, and in separate enclosures. One machine will be in the. grandstand enclosure ami part of tho Legor reserve, and another will be for the, L-egor enclosure, and for those on the outside or J>erby enclosure. Possibly another machine will be installed on the hill near the old mjle post. All the totalisators -will work in unison, eac'h machine showing exactly the same face, representing the total investments on cacli race at any moment. One of the great advantages of the separate machines will be that the congestion which is now so marked where all the business has to bo conducted at onemachine will be largely, if not completely, removed. The work of constructing the new machine is expected to occupy over twelve months, and a period of 18 months may. eJapse before the new instrument is in working order. The Wellington Itacin 2 Club h»i advised the Masterton "Racing Club that the jockey's license of T. Pritchard, of Masterton, has been cancelled by the District Committee for alleged incompetent horsemanship. It was reported to the meeting of the Masterton Racing Club, on Saturday, that tho club had mado a loss of £483 7s Gd in connexion with its Autumn Meeting.

Acceptances for ther Manawatu Racing Club's Autumn Meeting, and final payments for the Manawatu Sires' Produce Stakes and Manawatu Stakes, close on' Friday evening. A deputation from the_ Gore Racing and Trotting Clubs waited upon the Hon. (J. J. Anderson, Minister for Labour, on Friday night, when, in com-4 mo.n with other sporting bodies throughout the Dominion, a strong protest was entered against the action of the Government in talcing, tinder Section 25 • of the Finance Act, 1920, for the Consolidated Fund the fractions or surplus of the tbtalisator investments afterpayment of dividends. It was pointed out that the moneys involved were trust moneys held by various clubs, all of* which, are noh-proprietary. The fractions .were held and applied for the purposes of the sport which the clubs represented. It'.was further, pointed out that the direct taxation on.the sporting public, which is class taxation, had during the ten years from 1909 to 1919, according to official figures, increased tenfold, and that no other amusement was taxed.to an extent approaching this amount. The section of the Finance Act referred to. bore the construction that moneys impounded in the case of a protest which was not settled within seven days of the date of the race meeting wero to be paid into and "form part of" the Consolidated Fund, which would mean that investors unfortunate enough to invest their moneys on such an occasion would stand 'a very good chance of losing the lot. The deputation quoted figures to show that in the case of the local clubs the payment of surplus* totalisator moneys to the Treasury would in the past have resulted in the showing of a loss "on meetings which had produced a very small profit. The Minister, in reply to the deputation, stated that he was very pleased to have the club s views on the matter, and that some points had been raised which required investigation. He would be very glad to place the matter before his colleague, the Minister for Internal Affairs.

THE IMARIBBON CASE. (special to "the rnE.ss. r: ) BLENHEIM. April 5. Tho reserved judgment of Br Justice Hoiking in the caso of Newman Brothers v. J. J. Corry (Mayor of Blenheim), an action to recover possession of tho well-known racehorse Imaribeon, find 3 for the defendant with costs. Tho plaintiffs aro elderly men who carry on farming operations near Blenheim, and have had tho strain- of Imaribbon, who is a. descendant of Blue Ribbon, in their possession for over thirty years. Mr Corry Ims had Imaribbon ever since 1906, and the substantial question which the judge had to decide was whether tho defendant exercised at. option to purchase the maxo within twelve months of the occasion on. whichjie obtained from the plaintiffs the right of racing her. Having regard to the body of corroboration in support of the defendant's assertion that he bought tho horse, his Honour held tho assertion to be proved. In the course of his lengthy judgment, his Honour referred to the fact that the defendant is a member of the Marlborough Jockey Club and of the New Zealand Racing Conference, and added.—"A further circumstance, and in my opinion a very strong one, is that ihe defendant, who was a. racing official and familiar with the penalties he was under if In Tan another's horse in his own name without tho joint interest being registered, should nevertheless have begun to race her and continued to do so for a period of four years without the necessary registration. It seems to me incredible that the defendant ehould have done this, unless he was the J owner. It seems equally incredible that the plaintiffs with, <ia they now say, a full consciousness after the first year that there would be trouble, should havo' allowed this to go on for a like period if tho horse wa» theirs."

HOW EURYTHMIC WON THE SYDNEY CUP. (From "Sydney Daily Telegraph," of March 29th.) "By the Lord Harry! I never saw anything like that in my life." This heartfelt expression of opinion was literally wrung in gasps from one of tho greatest judges of horses racing in Australia, as Eurythmie hoadpd Arcli Marolla. after accomplishing tho seemingly impossible, and won the Syduey Cup, amidst a scene that ■will long remain a stirring memory. "Did you ?" he asked, turning to a score of men to whom the beat of hoofs is the salt :of life. And noL one of them could recall an occasion that might ho sot off against his opinion.
In truth, it was a remarkable performance. IVever have bono and jockey been so applauded, and never by eo great a crowd ato liandwick.
The sincerity of the appiausc was such that one felt that it was not duo to sc-lf-intercst, for it must bo remembered that, in a field of really grand horses, Eurythmie went to the post pcrhavf* as short a favourite as ever started in this great event. But let us got the* events concerned in the Cup in order. First is the parade of the champions who are to race for the trophy and tho £6OOO that goes with it. Back'of tho &tand tho bookmakers, are bawling the odds, and'the majority of ihe public are eagerly snapping up 6 to "4, ,7 to 1. and. at the denth-knock, 2 to 1 about the West Aus-tralian-owned champion. Now they are off to the post, the crowd, finished with the arduous ta.sk of getting its money on in. such a cnifh, applauding the favourite, with Dempsey up, ho i* !e;l to the barrier. What hopes are centred in that brilliant chesnut ? What loitunes, maybe? Keiiuaauhair goes iilov.s like th-.; sluggard he is until ha hears the ro;ir, "Thcy's off!" Arch Maroila take,? tho eye, and there is a scattered hand-clap-pin;; as he jogs contentedly to the task. They arc all out on the crurse rftiw, and there is a hurried rush for vantage positions.
fcyes strain across the grex liazn of dust th.it 1 i=cs 'from the. flat to where the horcei are lining up. There is soma delay.. The JRovcr. is a little fractious. Through tho haze the vivid green or blue—impossible to tell at the distance which —of a women's dress is descried, right near the barrier. There is a hurried consultation of books to see whose colours that dress approximates uy these who believe in omens, but before they huve discovered this indicator to fortune the hell clangs once, and the race for tho Sydney dip is on. The Rover, for all- his antic*", gets away first, but in a moment or so David is dancing along ahead of the field. Tho motley of jerking colours whirls into the, straight—as pretty a scene an could be imagined.- All eves are looking for the favourite. Few find him. He is in a bunch in the centre, while Sardis makes the' running. Away they go into the back stretch, where the murk makes it hard to follow.the-colours distinctly without powerful glasses. Then of a sudden there is a gasp. What'* tint last ? Surely not Eurythmic. But it is. Something seems to have gone wrong, and he appears for the' moment to have hfllfturr.ed round. There is a silence that is painful. It is too early yet to get excited about the result, or to anticipate' fne winner. Braille rushes to the fiont, and opens up a gap M he. leads the way into the straight. For a moßieai is, Jooka .n 1 !' war
and tho crowd at the Legor stand is roaring his name. Amazonia, flashes into the lecture and the gelding is hailed as the winner,'till suddenly ho w cut down by tho flying Arch ilarc-Ua. Excitement n fearsome. Everyone seems to have forgotten the lavourite. But, with a rumble like thunder, there comes', first from {ho flat, then from the Legcr, and lastly 4rom the stand, where, all eyes have been riveted on the battle between Arch Mnrella. and Amazonia—a sound almost indescribable. On the outskirts of tho flying horses comes the ohestnut, lying out. to it like a greyhound, with tho scarlet-jacket-ed Dempsev riding him like a fury. TVl'at a grand rider 1 What o game horse under him! You think these things, but it is all over in a second. The champion is at Arch Manilla's quarters. Mr Logue's hor*e fights gamely, but, inch by inch, lu is cut down. The crowd is spellbound with fascination as Dcnrpsey. little nugget that he is, litorallv lifts the favourite past the post, to win after the most desperate finish seen for many a year. He had done that which seemed impossible: so hod Eurythmic. And then tho crowd let ii<self go. Women had fainted, and strong men had trembled as though shaken with ague, as they watched tha struggle. Then, in a rush, they came surging to the enclosure fence, to cheer and cheer arain horse atd horseman. J4 was a greßt" tribute, end none on race track was ercr better deserved.
