COUNTY COUNCILS.

ELLESMERE. The Ellesinere County Council met *t Leeston" on Monday. Present—Crs. W. 0. Rennie (deputy-chairman), John .Nixon, John Heslop 'J. C. Free, and J. P. McEvedy. The 'Canterbury Progress League's organiser asked for the Council's backing in the j. efforts being made to havo the permanent work in connexion with the,diversion of the Harper'river completed. < ~'t ' ■ It was agreed that Cr. Free should represent the Council at to-day's meotiri? of the League. _ , Messrs Booth, Macdonald and Co. wrote that they had the Council's new stone-breake* plant well.under way, and'asked the Council to confer with them in regard to details before the plant was completed.-*!**. Cunningiam and Heslop to confer with, the firm «w soon as convenient. The secretary of the Leeston Progress League wrote that tho League, at a recent meeting, had decided to approve of Superintendent Warner's report on'fire-fighting plant for Leeston, with certain modifications. A deputation from the League, consisting of Messrs S.. Johnston, T. V. Ramsey, end J. C Mercer, also' waited upon the Council in connexion with the matter. It was mentioned thfc a suggestion had recently been made that the waters of the Leeston creek could be used for a high-pressure scheme for f.re purposes, and members agreed that, if the cost would not be too high, this would proWably be a much more satisfactory scheme, as it would do away with the necessity of procuring a fire engine coat of between JB7OO and £BOO, while the. mains could be used later onfor a high-pressure simply for houseiold purposes. ■ It was«decided to' refer the report back to Superintendent Warner to ascertain if .ho would accept the modifications suggested by the League, and whether he was prepared to recommend a high-pressure scheme as outlined. The Council thought that some definite information in regard to the second* scheme should be obtained before a poll of the ratepayers was taken; Cr. Heslop reported having, conferred with the District Engineer of Railways in regard to improving tho railway crossing at Solwyn. A gang of men was at work, and the improvements would 'be carried, out satisfactorily. « . •. The clerk reported that no tenders had been received for lighting the Leeston street lamps, but that he was endeavouring to make an arrangement so* that the work would bo done.

Tho tender.of Mr W. C Lowery was accepted for shingling work at Brookside, hi© prices being 2s Bd, Is lid, and jls 6d per cubic yard.
