annual meeting. ' The annual meeting of the Canterbury Builders' Association was held'Jast evening, the retiring president, Mr W. McGillivray, presiding over a large attendance. 4
The annual report stated that a good year had been experienced. Numerous amendments of existing by-laws had been drawn up by a special committee, and forwarded to the City 'Council, but so far no results had been apparent. The main question among builders during the year had been that of the cement supply. The Association had approached the Government on the question wMth a certain amount of success. In regard to accident assurance, the Association hoped to bring down some definite proposal in the near future. > , The balance-sheet showed that the receipts had amounted to £485 8s lOd and the expenditure to £392 13s 4d; leaving a credit balance af £92.15s 6d. The assets exceeded Jihe liabilities by. £795 Ids. In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, the president congratulated the Association on its position, and said that if it went\on as it was c]oing a "six-storeyed mansion" would" soon he necessary to accommodate it. ' ~,*,,,,, The motion was seconded by Mr W. H. Winsor and carried. Officers for the ensuing year were elected' as follows-.—President, Mr J. W. Francis; vicPpresidents, Messrs IJ. Hinkey and W. Williamson; treasurer, Mr H. ■ Pearce; secretary, Mr R. E. Nightingale; auditors, Messrs W. H. Winsor and N. McGillivray; commit tee, Messrs W. H. Winsor, N McGillivray, R. Scott, J. Graham, H. Harrison, L. Bull, and T. Webb. At the conclusion of the annual meeting the gathering developed into a social one. . . ~ The toast of the "Retiring Officers" was proposed by, the new president, Mr Francis, who made speoial reference to the good work done for the Association by the lato president, Mr McGillivray, . during his two years of office. Mr McGillivray responded to the toaßt, and proposed the health of the new president, to which Mr Francis briefly responded, expressing his intention of doing his best for the Association and to uphold the standard set by Mr McGillivray and his predecessors. Mr J. Graham pr6posed the) toast of "Kindred Trades.' 5 The builders, he said,' could do little without their allied trades. In particular, ; he congratulated the painters on the -their recent conference,, and incidentally he assured them that the builders would not "do them out of their work.". With the plumbers, also, Mr Graham, amidst laughter understood perfectly by those present, expressed sympathy, and at the same time congratulations. Messrs T. A. Bell and W. Dean responded to the toast,the latter, in particular, making a very humorous speech on behalf, or rather in defence, of the, plumbers. . ' ' The toast of "The Merchants". was proposed by Mr J. Greig, and responded to by Messrs C. Charters, Geo. Scott, junr., H. Taylor, H. Wilson, W. L. King, and G. Thompson. Amongst other toasts honoured wer« "The Ladies," proposed by Mr H. Hinkev and responded to by Messrs W Williamson, H. St. A. Murray, and W' Dean; "The Entertainers," proposed by Mr A. Clark and responded to by Messrs W. 'Searle, E. Parlett, and H. Wilson. . , . 4. really excellent musical programme was gone through during the evening, items beins contributed by Messrs C. Harrison, W. McGill, R..Turner, R. Robson, H. M. Taylor, J. H. Cocks, 0. T Warren. E. Parlett, I/; Jewell, a.. Wilson, and W. Searle. Mr C. Nathan acted as accompanist.
