• ♦ The Japanese Cabinet has decided to withdraw the Japanese troops from Chen-tao district, on the borders of Manchuria and Korea, despite tho activities of the bandits, provided the Chinese Government will agree to maintain order in the region.
An amended list gives nine killed in the railway smash at Wokalup, West Australia, and two injured. Fireman Wiiton was found dead still hanging on to the brake. Another man, named Meggs, was pinned by a leg, which had to be amputated to enable (him to bo rescued. It has been definitely decided to bury an unknown poilu under the Arc do Triomphe. The Socialists created an uproar in the Chamber, necessitating the suspension of the sitting, saying the decision amounted to arrogant militaristic action. Tho Premier replied that the act was in commemoration of tho jubilee of the Republic. A tragedy is reported at Alstonvillo, New South Wales. While shielding his daughter from Hubert Joiner, a returned soldier and a rejected suitor, who was endeavouring to shoot her, Lewis Lambert, tJhe father of the girl, was shot through the heart, death being instantaneous. Joiner was found in some scrub near by, with, a gunshot wound in the head. His condition is serious. The French police have arrested a band of remarkable criminals, wlio are believed to be guilty of many notorious crimes. They were led by a butcher named Reul Jean. They "mapped out the city of Paris into districts, whore they carried out systematic motor-car thefts and safe robberies, and committed several murders. All tho crimcs were rehearsed at night, under the direction of t)he leader. The police search, brought to light several bloodstained relics connected with recent murders.
