[Reference to tho condition of the Avpn was made at last night's meeting of the Canterbury Rowing Association. "What was wanted, snid one delegate, was moro water and less dirt. Other members drew attention to tho aniount of gravel brought into tho river by tho city drains. According to one delegate; there was a dray load at the Fitfc"erald avenuo channel. Another delegate, wlio said ho was not on the river much nowadays stated that lie had been absolutely surprised when going on tho Avon a fortnight ago to discover liow little wntcr ..ero -was in tho river. "It it a wonder to me how tho boata move along at all," remarked another member. The concensus of opinion was that the only hope was dredging, and in this connexion tho fear -which had been expressed that this would reduce the volume of water was laughed at. it being pointed out that where there was no mud there would bo water. It was further stated that dredging "would probably open up several of the old springs, especially in the vicinity of Barbados street, which had been sealed up The chairman (Mr F. D. Kosteven) uttered one warning in regard to dredgimr There were rapids between tho Madras and Rnrhadoes street bndges he snul, tho fall bcine fifteen if ' " T "!, ,f . * ?" cro rp moved it would let nil the head water down. The dredging would have to he below this. It wns decided to secure tho opinion of the clubs on the best means of improving the river before holding of the general meeting of interested parties trt discuss the matter next month.
