GISBORNE, January 31. Eric Adams, 20, a fireman employed) at the Motuhora stone quarry,, who was seriously injured yesterday in an engine accident, died to-day. It is stated that tho engine became derailed, and Adams was entangled in the canvas awning over the cab. He was pinned down under {the engine und scalded by the es-< caping steam. . WOODVILLE, January 31.. A N serious accident occurred at a Tailway crossing this morning while the 7.45 a.m. train from Palmorston North was approaching tho station. T. W. Hopper, a plumber, on a motor-bicycle witn side car, collided with the second carriage of the rain. He was thrown from the machine, and the carriage wheels passed over his loft arm, crushing it and severing tho hand. His skull was also fractured. , Hopper was conveyed to the Pahiatua Hospital. His condition is low, and he is suffering severely from shock. WELLINGTON, January 31. At the inquest on Mrs Maria Johnston, who was found hanging in a washhouse, a vordict of suicide whilst suffering from mental depression was returned. Evidence was given to the effect that deceased was on probation from the Porirna Mental Hospital, and suffered from depression.
