GISBORNE, January 31. A memorial to the late Hon. "Wi Pere, as proposed by a Native committee, was sanctioned by the Borough Council for erection in the public reserve. After the work wns begun, a petition was circulated against the proposal by survivors of the Poverty Bay massacre and' others. The Council decided to hear both sides, and at ft conference held today no decision was arrived at, but it »s believed that a committee of the Counr cil decided to recommend the full Council to allow the memorial to be erected on the site originally fixed on the waterfront.
