OPOSSUMS.

A GROWING MENACE,

Somo further interesting information regarding opossums, and tho_ damage done by them to fruit, to which reference was made in yesterday's issue, was given to a representative of "The Press" by Mr L. O. Gardiner, of Purau. Mr Gardiner said that the opossums had made their way over from the Kai-. tuna side of the hills to Purau, and are gradually working their way along the hills towards Port Levy. In Addition to their depredation# in respeot of peachos, Mr Gardiner has noted that on his property at Purau the walnut trees have been attacked by opossums, who have eaten every nut on the trees. Apparently, it is only a matter of time before these pests will reach Akaroa, which is famous for its walnut trees, and when that happens the opossum* will ho able to gorge themselves to their hearts' content. A statement in yesterday's issue, to the effect that "Mr J. Gardiner, of PufftU," introduced the brown nngtailod opossum at Purau, controverted by Mr Gardiner, who states that whoever was responsible for introducing the opossum to Purau, it waa not any "Mr Gardiner, of Purau."
