RETURNED SOLDIERS.

QUESTION OF EMPLOYMENT

Regarding the prospects of work being found in the city for unemployed returned soldiers, enquiries yesterday elicited the information that light; work, or work' for unskilled men is practically unobtainable. Men capable of doing pick and shovel work and skilled workmen it is possible could be placed. The number of returned men seeking work just at present is comparatively small compared with the numbers which have been dealt, with in the past. In one month in Christchurch there were no fewer than eighty seeking work, and in time they were found jobs. Just at present things are reported to be rather quiet in the city workshops, and as harvest has not started and, on account of the unsettled weather recently experienced, is likely to be later thin usual, there is comparatively little demand for country workers. . In the event of returned men being unable to get work right away and being out of funds, they are provided with grants by tho Patriotic Fund, where the circumstances are' considered to warrant assistance.

As a result of the publicity given to the matter of unemployment of Returned soldiers, Mr W. E. Leadley secretary of the Returned Soldiers' Association, was able to place several unemployed men in positions yesterday.
