BOROUGH COUNCILS.
ASHBURTON. At the Tegular meeting of _ the Ashlrorton Borough Councill, held last night, the Mayor (Mr R. Galbraith) reported that the bank overdraft now stood at £10,925 lis, and that the receipts since the last meeting -amounted to £1085 14a 3d. Correspondent© was read from Mr P. R. Climie, secretary of the Canterbury Progress League, asking the Mayor and Council to fix a date for the holding of a publio meeting for the purpose of forming a branch at Ashburton. A discussion took place on the question of completing the construri-inn of 21 lniles of footpaths and channels, and a motion waa carried that the work be done' out of money [ to hp raised by loan. 1 WOOLSTON. ' Tho "Wools-ton vBoTCUgh Council met last night. Present—The Mayor (Mr McGregor . Wright), and Crs. D. Rowse, G. S. White, j S. Johns, T. Rjtdcliffe, L. Hart, J. C. Hobson, -D. • Mcßae. 1 Cr. Mcßae reported that the Bv-laws Committee, after consideration of tie tramway ' order-in-council, regarding extension of siding * at tho Tanks, had agreed to the Tramway 1 Board's request for a. longer aiding than } originally contemplated. The action of tho committee was approved. J The Works Committee reported having had ■ under consideration the question of purE chasing metal from the Tramway Board.— Adopted. [ The Reserves Committee recommended that ' the Education Board be written to concernI ing the condition of the dividing fence at the school.—Adopted. Respecting the case of an old man, men--1 tioned at the previous meeting, who, it was alleged, was in tho habit of begging, and who had refused to .go to the Tuarangi Home, th© District Health Officer (Dr. Chesson) 1 wrote 'conveying, the report of -Inpivctor 1 Schon, who stated: Tho house is which he lives has 4 rooms; it did not contain much furniture, but it was very clean and tidy; . also tho back yard was kept very tidy. Dr. CheMon commented that there did not 6eem • much to complain about in respect of the . premises. The letter was received. Replying tp Cr. Rowse, the Mayor stated tnat the Town Clerk was getting_ the municipal roll ready for the next election. Cr. Mcßao brought up the Question of the failure of eom« of the electric lamps, and the Town Clerk stated that he had a list of defective lamps, and were replaced as new lamps became avnilble. Difficulty had been experienced in getting new lamps. NEW BRIGHTON. The New Brighton Borough Council "met last night. Present—Cis. -\Vinny (DeputyMayor), F. Christian, F. Sincock, C. lai;i-el-aon, F. Buxton, A. E. Leaver, A. W. Owles, and R. Browning. A resolution was passed conveying the sympathy of the Council to the Mayor (Mr F. Kibblewhite) in his illness. The Tramway Board stated that it was unable to supply the Council with mixed asphalt at present. - - The Navy .League .thanked the Gala Committee, through the Council, for having decided to give two-thirds of tho net proceeds of the Gala to the Navy League's War Fund Appeal. The Deputy-Mayor was appointed the Council's representative at the Christchurch Canal League's meeting. The application of the Tramway Band for the use of the Band Rotunda was agreed to. The Hon. G. W. Russell stated that the question of making some provision for widows and children left destitute Jby the reccnt epidemic had been and a public statement in connexion therewith had been made as to the intentions of the Government. Several circular letters were received from various local bodies in the Dominion complaining of - methods adopted by the Health Department in dealing with the recent epidemic. The North Beacli Surf Club stated it was prepared to pay the Council £7 10s to cl-ay the whole of the club's section at the club's pavilion. . The secretary of the Industries Committee of the House of Representatives intimated that the Council could give evidence/r°<",Ming the solar salt works when the committee was in Christchurch. Tho matter was referred to Mr McArthur. _ An application for a special order to build on a section in the borough havin«r a J«>«««r area than provided by the by-law was refused. The North Brighton Burgesses' Association brought several matters under th© notice of the Council, which were referred to the Works Committee. The Deputy-Mayor reported that sand had been carted away from the locality of Berry street. North Brighton, without a permit. It was decided that step 6 be taken to have it returned. The treasurer reported as follows: —Receipts £687 12s 2d, expenditure £1.137 10s lid. Fifty-two building permits had been granted to d»te, having an aggregate value of £14.C*5. . „ , An application from the North Beach Gala Committee for privileges on the day of its gala was granted.
