An amendment was moved to retain the Council of Education with, executive power, and four education boards for administration, the powers of bojrdo to be further curtailed if necessary. The amendment was rejected by forty-five votes to thirteen. The following motion was carried:— '•Tliat there should be appointed a National Board of Education, in lien of tho proscnt nine Education Boards/-" \ft was also resolved that the functions of tho "National Education Board should be to advise Parliament, to promulgate curricula, to supervise the work of education and voluntary committees, to povide and control the teaching staffs, to establish close or groun schools, as may be deemed necessary, and generally to direct tho educational functions of the nation.
