CANTERBURY MILITARY DISTICT. Still Seriously 111, improving-Howlett. D., 2nd Lt., Christcburch; J?® Benzy, C., Win* crater; Sadler, C. A., Fondalton. News has been received that Sergeant Malcolm J. Thomas, who was dangerously wounded on October 7th, is returning to New Zealand in the Mahcno. Sergeant Thomas, who is a son of the late Dr. Walter Thomas, left with the loth Reinforcements. Mrs Reader, Queen street, Sydenham, has been advised that Tnvateß. Diebert will arrive with draft,2os,- Private Diebert left with the 19th Reinforcements andi was wounded in April last. Mr G. Hurley, of Rangiora. has received advice that his son, Rifleman U--0 Hurlev, who has been a prisoner ot war in Germany, has been repatriated, •and arrived at Ripon. on December 31st. Lieutenant "VV. O'Connell, of Temuka, is expected to arrive in Now Zealand in one of the transports due. at an cam date. He is a Main. Body man, and! enlisted in Christchurch. "He was, without exception, tho brtdvest man I have over met, and his loss to me as commanding officer is irreparable," was the way in which the late Lieut.-Colonel Cecil F.' G. Humphries, M.C., D.C.M.," was described) by ' his Brigadier. ' Lieut.-ColoneL Humphries, who was 31 years of agej, wag a very well-known Christchurch. boy, being particularly prominent in. football circles. He played for the Christchurch Club and for Canterbury. He was a son of Mrs A. R. Rowse formerly of the Excelsior Hotel, and was visiting Europe with his mother when f wjfr broke out. ne went ito France in August, 1914, with the A.S.C., as a sergoant, but in older to join a combatant unit, gave up. his stripes and .trans-/ ferred to the Manchester Regiment as a private. He won the D.C.M. in Deccmbor of the same year, and in addition was promoted sergeant for his-gal-lantry at Givenchy. He was wounded at Neuve Chapelle, and on recovering was given a commission in the High'and Light Infantry. In September,, 191.7, he was awarded the Military Cross, to which he received a bar later. gained rapid promotion in rank. 'He saw service for some months on the Italian front, and on returning to France was given the command of a battalion of tho Norfolk Regiment, with which he was serving when he met his death.
