LIQUOR TRADE.

THE PROPOSED POLL. (fbess association telegrams.) TIMARU, July 9. The Rev. R. S. Gray, representing the New Zealand Alliance, addressed a large meeting last night. Replying tc the Hon. G. \V. Russell, ho stated that there had keen no agreement regarding a liquor poll. The trade had never been approached by, nor had it approached, the Alliance. The Alliance would be no party to a compact with the trade. The present attitude was due solely to the strong representations of business men. The necessity for adopting the Efficiency Board's proposal for immediate prohibition was in the economic and general interests of the Dominion IHJNEDIN, July 9. Tho Dunedm Presbytery to-day decided to support the proposals of the Efficiency Board for the prohibition of the liquor traffic. ' , . AUCKLAND, July 9. The opinion expressed by the Hon. U. W. Russell that the leaders of the liquor trade and the executive of the r«ew Zealand Alliance would agree—if indeed they had not already agreed— to a j>oll of the electors on the liquor question and the proposals of the National Efficiency Board, was submitted ™ A. S. Bnnkart, chairman of the .Auckland Provincial Council, and to Smallfield, president of i the Alliance. Mr Bnnkart dismissed I the matter by remarking that such a statement could only emanate from the imagination of the Minister. It was quite inacourate. Mr Smallfield, while declaring that the Alliance was opposed to the payment of compensation, said it was prepared to assent to such payment as an act of expediency and as a means of abolishing the trade. The Efficiency Board _ regarded the payment of compensation as an immediate means of finally disposing of the trade, and the leaders of the Alliance felt they had no right to oppose this view, and had therefore decided to support the Board.
