CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

MONTHLY MEETING

Tho month]}* meeting of the council of the Chamber of Commcrc© was held yesterday, Mr C. H. Hewlett, president, in the chair. The General Post Office, Wellington, replied to a letter regarding publication of arrival of mails in England, stating that tho Acting-Postmaster-General had decided to advertise tho arrival-of mails in England a week after their arrival. The Acting-Prime Minister replied to a letter forwarding a resolution urging the appointment of a Minister of Commerce, stating that the matter would be noted for consideration after tho return of the Prime Minister and the Minister of Finance to New Zealand. The Minister of Defence wrote with reference to the resolution asking the Government to prevent the distribution of' antiuiiiitarist and pro-German propaganda, slating that the matter lir-'J been under consideration. The Government had the necessarypowers under the War Regulations to deal with such literature, and would prevent the circulation of any which had a seditious tendene;'. , The president of the New Zealand Marine Underwriters' Association wrote on the question of pillage. It was decried to approach tho Minister of Justice with regard to the penalties for convictions. The Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce forwarded a resolution with regard to daylight saving. It was decided to consider the matter at nest meeting.

The Sydney Chamber of Commerce advised that there was a large quantity of strawboards ex 5.3. Posen, port marked for Lyttelton, at Eio de Janeiro. It was decided to write and ask the Sydney Chamber of Commerce if it had a list of tho marks of such cargo.

The Grain Merchants' Association forward- « 3 copy of terms, 1918, asking the approval of the Chamber. It was decided to approve, and ask tho other Chambers in tho South Island to endorse the terms.

The matter of the. isolation of the South Island during a storm such as has recently been experienced, was under consideration by tho Council, and it was decided to write to the Postmaster-General, asking for a promise that when Parliament meets steps will be taken to connect Lyttelton with Wellington, cither by- coble or wireless.
