Mr and Mrs J. J. Dougall have returned to Christchureh after a visit to the North Island.

Mr and Mrs W. S. Wright (New Plymouth) are visiting Christchureh. Tho Rev. A. T. Thompson and Mrs Thompson were the guests of honour at an at home given by Miss E. A. Clarke in tho Masonic Hall yesterday. After afternoon tea, the hostess in a neat little speech, made reference to tho excellent work that had been done by Mr Thompson in connexion with tho mission for lepers, of which ho was vice-president. In responding, Mr Thompson said that he hoped his new duties as secretary for tho British and Foreign Bible Society would not prevent him from still beinjr connected with the work of the missions. Among those present were Canon and Mrs Hamilton, tho Rev. J. and Mrs Williams, the Rev. O. Fitzgerald, the Rev. P. N. Knight, Mrs Erwin, Mrs Campbell, tho Rev. J. Patorson, "Miss Paterson, Mrs Brock, Miss Brock, Mr and Mrs Blyth, Mrs Kaye, Mrs Mac Gibbon, Miss Tale, and others.

The public meeting of tlic Order of the Star in the East was held in tho Theosopbical Hall on Sunday afternoon. Mrs Fletcher gavo an interesting address on "The Use of Ceremonies.''

The eneagement is announced of Mr C. N. DenJiani, of the Bank of New Zealand staff, Waipawa, a son of Mr Edward Dcnliam, Sumner, to Miss Ruth Livingstone, M.A., third daughter of Mr T. Livingstone, Christchureh. An old identity of Otago, Mrs Jean Barnett, passed away at Ihraedin on Sunday. Mrs Barnett was a daughter of a soldier, Sargcant-Major Alexander, who was wounded in tho Battlo of Waterloo, and she has six grandsons serving in the present war, one of whom, Private R. R. Smith, has won tho Military Medal. Mrs Bamett arrived at Port Chalmers in the Strathmoro in 1856. She was born at Aberdeen in 1822.
