A TRAMWAY BOARD INCIDENT. At; yesterday's,meeting of the newly elected Tramway Board, when nominations were called fnr the F uS ition of deputy-chairman, Air H. i'earce proposed Mr S. A. Staples. Mr D. Sykcs: I am not squealing, but my claim was jumped before. It is not cricket, and is not playing the game. "Order, order,"' said the- chairman (Hon. J. Barr) and other members. "There is no second nr.." Mr Staples's nomination was seconded. Mr T. H. Davey said he was sorry that Mr Sykes had said what he had, because he was going to nominate him. He had nothing to object to m ?»lr Staples,' but Mr Sykes had been a member of; the Board for a longer period than Mr Staples, and priority of service should .count in these matters. MrW. J. Walter seconded Mr Sykes's nomination. Mr Staples said Mr Sykes and he had always' worked hand in band, and - he hoped this would be a friendly contest. Mr Sykes said ne d:J not .want 10 enter into a contest with Mr Staples, and would therefore prefer to. have his nomination withdrawn. He'complained, however, of having prtiriousiy been overlooked. Mr Davey said that if M** Syke? really wished to have fcis nomination withdrawn he supposed it would have to be. It was out of no spirit of opposition to Mr Staples that he had nominated Mr Sykes, but he considered these appointments should be made on length of servioe. Mr Sykes bad placed him in an awkward position, but he thought he had better go to the poll.
