COUNTY COUNCILS.
ELLESMERE. Tho monthly meeting of the Ellesmere County Council, was attended by Councillors J. Cunningham (chairman), J. S. Boag, J. Storry, J. P. McEvedy, I'. J. X«emon, and James Quigley. Tho .Springs County Council wrote suggesting that fid per dozen should be paid by local bodies for heads of small birds. It was decided to reply that the Council could not see its way to distribute poisoned wheat free of cost and purohoee biros' heads at the same time. An offer from Mr P. G. FramptOn to clean drains on the Branch Drain road and Brook-side-Dunsandel road at 2s Gd per ohain, tho Council to'pay half the coat, was accepted. Mr D. Jones, of Dunsondel, offered, at current.rates, shingle, for road repairs in tho vicinity of his land, ' It was agreed that the riding . members should inspect the'roads and havo repairs effected as soon as possible. Tho 'WTjangarei County Council wjote suggesting that local bodies should urgo the Government not to. settle soldiers on poor class land, upon' which they would have dif> .ficulty in making a living. No action was taken in this matter.
A deputation from Taumutu. comprising Messrs Schnelle, sen.,. J. Patterson, jun,, and C. L. Brown, interviewed the Council , concerning on outlet for their drainag* water through a 40-acre native reserve. Mr R. L. Cant was present to ropreseht the owner of the reserve.
After * good deal of discussion the chair? man informed the deputation that the Council would have to ascertain what powers it had ■ with regard to the matter before _ it could take any action. The legal position would be gone into as soon as possible, and th© councillors, would make an inspection of tho locality, along with the interested paxties,'
It was decided to obtain fuller isfoimaticn concerning a complaint about stray cattle and a stray bull, with a view to prosecuting the owners of the stock. The clerk was instructed to. servo notices upon the ljwjnsee of the Leeeton Hotel to have a macroc&rpa fence along tho recreation ground trimmed, as it was oneroaching on the footbath. Instructions were given tho watcr-rao© caretaker to have a footbridge constructed over a race on the Tramway road, Dunsandel. The repairs to tho road from "Willeodcn" to Bishop's Corner, the Irwell-Doyleston road, and the Brookside-Selwyn road, were author- ' was decided to replace the 9-inch pipe culvert opposite Mr "Wroot's land at 'Southbridge with a motor culvert of concrete halfpipes. ' <
