After the Hinemoa comes off the Wellington patent slip, where she is undergoing overhaul, she will sail on a, periodical visit to the southern lighthouses. Mr G. Donnelly has joined the Pateena as radio operator, replacing Mr A. S. Bloomfield, who has joined the Monowai in a similar capacity, relieving Mr F. N. Davidson. All work on the Lyttelton waterfront was suspended yesterday owing to the stormy weather. . The Cygnet did not sail last evening for Kaikouro owing to the heavy seas running on' tie coast. The Defender is also delayed at Lyttelton. Among the many victims of the torpedoing of the a.s. Aparima in the English Channel some months ago was Mr J. Mackay, chief steward on the vessel, who had a wide circle of friends in Auckland. Word has been received by the latest mail from England that about eight weeks ago Mr Mackay's body was washed up at Weymouth, his identity being disclosed by his watch and papers, and the interment at Weymouth, wes carried out by the British and Foreign Seamen's Mission.
Captain J. W. "Watson Black, one of the Union Caatlo commanders, died in hospital at Southampton just before the last mail left England. Aged forty-five when war broke out ho entered the Admiralty service and commanded a transport in the Dardanelles, landing at Beach W. Afterwards he successfully resisted an attack by a submarine in the Mediterranean, and the Gurkha officers on board his ship presented him with a jewelled sword as a memento. Subsequently he was the maeter of a hospital ship that was mined in the English Channel, and later he commanded the Gloucester Castle, which was torpedoed in. the Channel with 600 »ick on board.
