GERMAN SCIENTISTS REGRETS.
PUBLIC ENTHUSIASM
SYDNEY. August 2. Two Germans, who are amongst the party of scientists travelling on tho Makura, are much upset at the news of the war. Professor Goldstein declares:— ''' lt is very terrible We never dreamt of 6uch a bolt falling. We aro all so friendly, and wo fear this is going to cause estrangements." Herr Pass said he had planned to stay iv Australia for somo timo, but now he must hurry back. It was expected that an explosion would occur in Europo, but not so big as this. Yesterday, crowds of people gathered in tho parks and on the foreshores. Patriotic references wero made by several speakers, who -tvero eagerly cheered. A feature of the proceedings was the German bands playing patriotic British and martial airs. The German Consul-General says that he has received no official information regarding the declaration of war, and says he does not believe there is any chanco of a clash of arms between England and Germany. This he will refuse to believe till" forced to do so. Two German Consular officers havo departed hurriedly for Germany. There wero special referenced and prayers in all the churches yesterday morning for peace, and at tlie later services, when it became known that Germany had declared war and that a general conflagration waß threatened.
The French Consul at Melbourne has notified his countrymen to hold themselves in readiness to rejoin their country's arms. Ho urgently requests them to report to the Consulate
